Earl “Barney” Danforth passed away quietly at the Colonel Belcher in Calgary, Alberta, with his eldest son Ken, at his side on Monday, July 23, 2018 at the age of 92 years.
Barney was the fourth child and youngest son of Avis and Robert Danforth of Black Diamond, Alberta. He grew up in Black Diamond, Alberta, and married Sheilah Morris, who passed away from Parkinson’s at the age of 67. He then married Maud Whiaka, who passed away from a heart attack, and June Danforth, who also passed away from Parkinson’s disease.
Barney served as a Provost Marshal during WWII until he was discharged for medical reasons. He also served in the British South Africa Police as a constable, providing convoy protection for highways during the bush war in Rhodesia.
Barney leaves behind three children, Ken (Paddy) of South Africa, Mark (Sandy) of New Zealand and Lorae (Fred) of Vancouver Island; and his sister, Erma, who is still living in Black Diamond and just celebrated her 104th birthday; grandchildren, Ryan, Ross, Troy, Shannon, Kirsten and Tyler; as well as several great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his brothers, Guy and Owen Danforth.
The family would like to thank all the staff at the Carewest Colonel Belcher, especially those in the Gibraltar Wing, who worked tirelessly and took such great care of our dad; as well as a special thanks to Ken, who made such a great effort to be with dad during his last days.
A private Graveside Service will be held at a later date.
