Our loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, sister-in-law and friend passed away peacefully on Monday, June 17, 2017 at the age of 92 years. Edith was born, one of seven children, on the family Farm near Darmody, SK. Edith accompanied by her brother Billy and sister Ruby attended the Saskatoon School for the Deaf. During her 11 years at boarding school she developed many lifelong friendships and has remained an active member of the deaf community her entire life.
Edith never allowed deafness to be an obstacle in her life. After school she worked for the Saskatchewan Provincial Government in Regina prior to moving to Calgary where she met and married the love of her life, Donald Van Camp. Together they raised 3 children, Rick (Dean) Van Camp, Madeleine Warnke (Ken) and Ashley Van Camp (Kelly). Donald passed away suddenly when she was only 45 years old. Widowed with two young children to support she returned to the workforce and was employed by the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) in the Graphic Arts department. During this time she achieved her trade certification as a Printing and Graphic Arts Craftsmen and was employed at SAIT until her retirement in 1990.
Edith was a stylish woman who loved clothes, jewelry and shopping. She will be remembered as an example of strength, endurance and as an early leader of women's independence, leading by example; how to be successful in the workplace, conducting one self and the mentoring of others.
At home her brownies were famous and she loved to bake. She was a loving mother, faithful daughter, loyal friend and fun auntie. She was always proud of her grandchildren, Mike Van Camp, Holly Michalsky (Travis), Chris Van Camp, Brad Van Camp (Lyssa), David Warnke (Natalie) and Savannah Van Camp. Edith also cherished her two great-grandchildren Josie and Ethan Michalsky.
Edith was predeceased by her husband Don, parents Laura and William, siblings Bud, Grace, Billy, Ruby, Pearl, Bert and grandson Chris Van Camp.
A Celebration of Edith’s Life will be held FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Friday, July 28, 2017 at 2:00 p.m.
Special thanks to the staff at the Beverly Midnapore Age Care for their compassion in the final months of Edith's life. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations directly to the Calgary Association of the Deaf, 63 Cornell Road, NW Calgary, AB T2L 0L4.
