Ernest “Ernie” Trosch passed away peacefully on Friday, May 1, 2026 at the age of 93, surrounded by his family. Ernie is survived by his loving wife of 63 years Betty; his son John (Jackie); daughter Sylvia; and grandchildren Emma (Jordan), Megan (Brandon) and Andrew (Julia). Ernie was overjoyed to welcome the birth of his great grandson Myles, born to Megan and Brandon this past year. Ernie was predeceased by his father Ernst; mother Bertha; stepmother Lina; and brother Werner.
Ernie was born in Langenthal, Switzerland and spent his childhood and school years nearby in Aarwangen. After completing business school and serving his mandatory military service, he made the bold decision to immigrate to Canada. A journey that would lead him to Wetaskiwin, AB. It was there that he would first meet Betty and her parents John and Anna. Also from Switzerland, John and Anna helped Ernie transition to life in Canada employing him as a farm hand. It was here Ernie developed a lifelong connection to the land and rural life. Once he found his feet, Ernie went on to help other family farms in the area, but after a short time was ready for more. He made the move to banking, working for Canadian Imperial Bank in Sylvan Lake, AB and Piapot, SK. During this time, Oil and Gas was emerging as a growth industry in western Canada and Ernie wanted to be part of the action. He took a position with Mobil Oil where he would spend the next 32 years of his career in accounting and finance. His time with Mobil would take him to Weyburn, Regina, Drayton Valley, Edmonton, Calgary, Dartmouth and Toronto. One of his favourite work experiences was being involved in the drilling of Mobil’s first exploration well on Sable Island, offshore Nova Scotia. Throughout his career Ernie’s passion, commitment and integrity have been recognized and appreciated by all those who worked with him.
The support, kindness and good fortune Ernie experienced throughout his early life and career would make a lasting impact on him. After retiring, Ernie and Betty were able to travel extensively and committed themselves to new passions, giving generously of their time and energy. Ernie always had a kindred association with those seeking to forge a new life for themselves and was always willing to lend a helping hand. With his humble approach Ernie was able to meet people where they were at, enabling him to make deep personal connections. Ernie and Betty also developed special relationships with their grandchildren, sharing their own passions and helping to nurture them on their own individual journeys.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the many healthcare workers that provided comfort and support to Ernie as he embarked on his final journey.
A Celebration of Ernie’s Life will be held at Varsity Acres Presbyterian Church, 4612 Varsity Dr NW, Calgary, AB on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
