Evan Kwong

17 November, 196426 November, 2020

It is with heartbreaking sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Evan Kwong on Thursday, November 26th, 2020, after three years of battling Head and Neck Cancer at the age of 56 years.

Evan was born on November 17th, 1964, in Calgary, Alberta. He attended the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology and graduated with a Diploma in Technology specializing in Architectural Technology & Building Development. With that he worked as an Architectural Hardware Consultant with Shanahan’s Building Specialties, Ingersoll Rand and Allegion Canada. Having been part of the industry since 1985, he was well respected and admired by his peers.

Having played sports all his life, his favorites were golf and hockey. He loved the time he put into his men’s team, as well as coaching on his daughters’ teams in Simons Valley Hockey Association & Girls Hockey Calgary. Coaching came naturally to him as he was able to connect with the kids at their level. He was just another kid at heart.

A devoted father and husband, he is lovingly remembered by his wife, Pey, and their daughters: Amanda, Michelle and Deanna. He is survived by his father & mother Wah Tung Kwong and Ling Man Kwong, as well as his sister Carol Kwong (Marty Hennel) and Nada Kwong (Ian Brown) and nephews Nigel Brown and Andrew Brown.

A private service will be held for the family to say their final farewell. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made directly to the Alberta Cancer Foundation at

Our sincere condolences to Pey and your daughters and the rest of the Kwong family. We met Evan through hockey and I had the opportunity to play both against him and with him. He was a wonderful man whom I enjoyed talking with and spending time with. You will be missed. Rest in Peace.

Evan and I were colleagues at Allegion since 2013. While we only knew each other for a brief time, I was always so appreciative of his support. I would like to express my sincerest condolences to Evan’s immediate and extended family. May you all be granted peace and the strength to weather this heartbreaking storm. God speed Evan.

My sincere condolences to Pey and the girls. I met Evan and Pey many years ago through our mutual friend, Glen Soo, when I was living in Calgary. We played volleyball together at the time, and enjoyed a short, but great friendship before I moved back to the west coast. Despite the long time it's been since then, we have still kept in touch and I am deeply saddened to hear of Evan's passing. He was definitely taken too early. Pey - wishing you and your daughters beautiful memories to help you through this difficult time.

Myself and many others were very saddened to hear about the passing of Evan and my condolences go out to his wife, children and parents. Evan was responsible for hiring me into the construction industry (Shanahans) 30+ years ago and I remember so much wanting to work there when I was young. I saw that GIGANTIC blue building on Barlow Trail and said to myself "I really need to work there" I submitted my resume and followed up with Evan.
First Call to Evan: Hi Evan.....are you going to hire me?
Hi Mike....we are still looking at resumes.
Second Call to Evan: Hi Evan.....are you going to hire me?
Hi Mike....we are still looking at resumes.
Oh Hi Mike......actually I was going to call you today. Can you start tomorrow
Me: Absolutely........
I'll never forget that I basically threatened him into hiring me but finally he did......LOL
We had a lot of laughs after that both at and away from work. We had many beers together whether it a was after playing hockey or a round of golf or just on a Friday afternoon.
He also taught me to teach myself once I moved into the office. Hey Evan, I need this: "did you look in your catalogue Mike" (Me....grumble grumble grumble.....oh there it is)
Hey Evan, I need a cost on this: "did you look in your price list"
Me....grumble grumble grumble.....oh there it is)
It always used to (well you know) when he would say that but it sure helped me to learn and he was one of the best teachers I ever had.
I'm still shocked and saddened that he has left us but when I think of the many good times we had it's those memories that put a smile on my face and I know he lived as hard as he could possibly could have and had no regrets I'm sure. "GO OILERS GO EV!! (Yeah I always called him Ev) He'll smirk but still enjoy that.........
