Franciszek Miernik

Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle to nephews and nieces in Poland, and a dear friend to many. Franciszek lived a life full of kindness, hard work, and generosity.

Franciszek was born on October 11, 1933, in Łętownia (founded by Casimir the Great in 1365), in the administrative district of Gmina Jordanów, Poland, to Maria and Jan Miernik.

Franciszek spent his school years there with his 5 brothers. He moved to Kraków-Nowa Huta in early 1950’s, and in 1953 he met Janina, whom he married in 1954. Together they built a loving family and raised two children: daughter Danuta and son Zbigniew. In November 1981 they came to visit Zbigniew in Calgary, and since the martial law was in effect in Poland from December 13, 1981, until July 22, 1983, they decided to stay in Calgary and built their new life here. They celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary on December 26, 2025.

Franciszek and Janina were very active in the Polish Church, being members of many groups. Franciszek was also a member of the Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus, Council 14497.

Franciszek worked for 30 years in HPR Nowa Huta and for over 20 years at Standen’s Ltd.

Franciszek is survived by his wife of 71 years Janina; his children Danuta and Zbigniew (Mary); grandchildren Michelle (Tim), Anna (Altus), and Mark (Lisa); great-granddaughter Peyton; his brothers Józef and Bolesław, and their families.

Franciszek was predeceased by his parents Jan and Maria Miernik, his brothers Władysław, Bronisław, and Stefan Miernik.

He leaves behind a legacy his family will carry forward: hard work, honesty, resilience, and adaptability.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, 2111 Uxbridge Drive N.W., Calgary, on Friday, September 11th, 2026, at 11:00 a.m.

Interment will follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery, 3219 4th Street N.W., Calgary.
