Garry was the second born child of Herb Morash and Ruby Morash and grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba with his four siblings. At the age of 18 he joined the Canadian Armed Forces with the RCHA in November 1963. His service featured a brief tour in Germany and an award for marksmanship; which came in handy later in life when he took up hunting. Upon completing his service, he obtained his steam engineer ticket, and in 1971, moved to Yellowknife to work as Chief Steam Engineer at Giant Gold Mine, where he met his wife, Susan.
Garry and Susan married on December 22, 1972, in Dixonville, Alberta, and in 1975, they moved to Edmonton and started a family welcoming daughter Jennifer Kathleen in 1977.
1979 brought another move, this time to Calgary, where son Kristoffer Gordon was born soon after in 1980. His career took him from Mount Royal College to the Catholic School Board until retirement at which time he started up his own consulting business and enjoyed being his own boss for many years.
Garry had a passion for music and singing and played the guitar his entire adult life. He wrote his own songs, was a talented poet, and shared his music generously over the years—entertaining with friends along the Stampede Parade route, recording family Christmas albums, and playing Puff the Magic Dragon for his grandchildren to dance to. In retirement, he joined Advanced Ukulele, the Men Folk Singing Group, and the singing circle through the Kirby Centre. His friends were often connected to music (or hunting) and in his retirement years they became his community.
Garry liked to keep people on their toes with his wicked sense of humour (apologies to all those who may not have known him well enough to get him), and was also well known for sending daily jokes to family and friends. He discovered his love of golf later in life, a passion he enjoyed as a City of Calgary Course Marshal, sharing many rounds with his children and grandchildren. The game often accompanied him on his travels—from Mesa and Hawaii to the famed Old Course in Scotland. Garry and Susan spent many summers adventuring with their kids in their Boler trailer, later upgrading to a spacious fifth wheel for travels of their own, with numerous international trips sprinkled in between.
Garry is survived by his wife Susan: children Jennifer (Rob) and children Katie, Matt and Bella; Kris (Kerri) and children Kora and Kacey and his siblings Debbie and Van Morash.
Garry is predeceased by his parents Herb Morash and Ruby Morash, his brothers Lionel and Terry Morash and sister Donna Bagamery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Salvation Army Calgary Agape Hospice.
A Celebration of Life will be held in honour of Garry on Friday, November 28, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. at The Winter Club, 4611 14 ST N.W., Calgary, Alberta. Family and friends are invited to join in sharing memories and celebrating a life well lived. Please use the Social Entrance on the West side of the building for the easiest access.
