At the young age of 18 she met, fell in love and married Erwin Barsness and moved to the prairies of Southern Saskatchewan in the small farming community of Frontier. Together they established their home and had two sons, Robert and Roy.
Geraldine committed her life to her community, her church and her family. Her kitchen belonged to the community. From Fall Suppers, to curling bonspiels, skating rink activities, church potlucks and family reunions, the taste of Gerry was offered to all. She loved her Frontier community where she formed deep and lovely relationships that lasted for a lifetime. She took all of that love of community with her into her retirement in Calgary forming new relationships that continued to bring her joy and contentment. As she left her final home in Red Deer – the staff and friends at Redwoods, lost a friend that they too had come to love and know as a woman who always cared for others.
Geraldine loved her family deeply and embraced her daughter-in-laws, Norma and Marie as though they were her very own. She loved and doted on her grandchildren, Brittany, Jonathan, Brent and Jordan convinced they could do no wrong. .
She was a woman of deep faith anchored in a loving God who sustained her everyday.
Geraldine’s husband preceded her in death. She is survived by her children Bob (Norma), Roy (Marie) Barsness and grandchildren Brittany (Chad) Thomas, Jonathan, Brent and Jordan Barsness.
Geraldine’s presence among us will be deeply missed. But her precious spirit will live on in all that have known and loved her.
If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Red Deer Hospice Society, 99 Arnot Avenue, Red Deer, Alberta T4R 3S6.
