Mrs. Gerda Nussli

Gerda was born above her parent’s butcher shop in Zeist, Holland in 1929. The family had hard times during the war but they all managed to survive to cheer the liberating Canadian troops in 1945. Soon after, Gerda’s older sister Elsie met George Ingeveld and moved to Calgary with the rest of the family following, arriving in Canada in 1952. She stayed with her sister for a few months before getting a job at the Hudson Bay store in Calgary in order to learn English. A while later, while attending a dance at the Dutch Canadian Club, Werner Nussli asked her for a dance and the rest is history. They married on April 3, 1954. The couple were founding members of the Dutch Reformed Church in Calgary on 30th Ave S.W. that same year and remained active members for many years. Gerda became a Canadian citizen in 1958, two months before welcoming the first of their 4 children. Gerda loved swimming and singing and she was excellent at both. She sang with the Philharmonic for several years and for many years in church. After they moved to their retirement home in Country Hills she volunteered at the care centre nearby, singing for the “old people” there once a week until co-vid put a stop to that. Gerda swam all of her life, amazing people by how far she could go. They also enjoyed travelling, going to Europe several times and on bus tours around Canada and the USA.

Although mom was losing her memory for the last few years she never lost her kind heart and her love of Jesus. She will be sorely missed.

Gerda is survived by her sons Ronald (Fran) and Peter (Patricia) with their children Michael (Andrea), Nicolas and Sarah (Jason); daughter Sylvia (Keith) with their daughter Carmella; as well as by daughter-in-law Cheryl, with her daughters Crystal (Juan) and Victoria (Guy). She has 5 great grandchildren Dylan, Trini, Luke, Aria and Eli who she happily greeted just this June.

Gerda was predeceased by her loving husband of 63 years, Werner Nussli, as well as by her son Edward, husband to Cheryl and father to Crystal and Victoria.

A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, December 29, 2022 at 2:00 pm at Foster’s Garden Chapel, 3220 – 4 Street N.W. Calgary, AB., with a Viewing from 1:30pm to 2:00pm.

Gerda will be laid to rest with her beloved Werner at Mountain View Memorial Gardens in Calgary, AB.
