Gertrude May Speer

Gertrude Speer passed away peacefully in Calgary, AB at the Rosedale Hospice on September 30, 2013 at the age of 93 years.

Gertrude is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Butterworth and grandson Colin (Kate Springett). She is also survived by sisters-in-law Evelyn Shedden and Audrey Benson (Vernor), Doris Speer, Irene Dudley as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Gertrude is predeceased by her husband Benton Speer; sisters Hazel (Monte) Brookman, Shirley (George) Pearen; and nephews Erroll Pearen and Brooks Bunting. All who came into Gertrude’s presence experienced love, acceptance and hospitality. She, along with Benton, changed others’ lives by the sheer love exuded. After Benton passed away, Gertrude’s gifts of love and generosity never faded. She became an honorary member of the 5th Dimension Hiking Club, and found many new friends. Once a friend, she did not let go of such special relationships.

A Funeral Service will be held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made directly to The Canadian Cancer Society, 200-325 Manning Road N.E.
