It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Greg Goss on Thursday, March 4, 2021 at his home in Calgary, Alberta. Greg is survived by his brothers Rob Goss (Lee) and Jan Goss, sister Nancy Hillmer (Eric), nieces and nephew Nicole Quinn (Greg), Lindsay Bjorge (David), Sarah Hillmer and Colin Hillmer, second wife Moria McKechnie, girlfriend Erin McAllister and extended family. He is predeceased by his parents Ruth and Mel Goss and first wife Wendy Goss.
Greg was born in Toronto and moved with his family to Kelowna, B.C. when he was 7. He grew up hiking and then driving the surrounding hills. He fit his large body frame of 6’5” into his small green Mazda, earning him the CB handle of ‘Green Sardine’. He had stories of vehicle Hide and Seek and driving places where small green Mazdas are not designed to go. His love of energy efficient cars/motorcycles/scooters stayed with him for life.
Greg was kind, compassionate, and opinionated and had a huge sense of right and wrong. He was very loyal to his friends and family. His family included a cat or two and during an intercity move he blogged, “Home is where the cat is”. His tenants were close friends, and everyone benefited from the strong community in his house.
Greg had an active, playful intelligence and loved to learn. He was the high school Valedictorian. After graduation from SAIT in Computer Technology, the companies searched him out to offer jobs. His career included working at Teck Cominco and BC Rail until its operations closed. When one career path came to an end, he would shrug his shoulders, make a joke and look for something else. He had his own private consulting business ‘What Next Personal Computer Services’. Greg was always up to a new challenge. At the age of 51 he worked towards his CGA accounting designation, graduating from SAIT in Business Administration 28 years after his first graduation. There were jokes regarding the irony that many of his classmates weren’t yet born when Greg was there the first time. At the time of his passing Greg was employed as the FINTRAC Compliance Officer at Albern Coins & Foreign Exchange.
Greg’s social life varied from hikes, LAN parties, karaoke and pool. He hiked the West Coast Trail and near Mount Robson with his brother Rob. His wife Wendy was a travel agent allowing travel to Paris, Belize and Galveston. Greg was a true geek in the proper sense of the word. He delighted in technical challenges and computers were one outlet for that passion. His computer allowed him to participate in online communities with others of like minds.
In many ways Greg was larger than life. He was a large man with a large voice, a large laugh, and a large heart. He will be greatly missed.
A Celebration of Greg's Life will be held at Foster's Garden Chapel, 3220 - 4 Street N.W., (across from Queen's Park Cemetery) on Saturday, July 24, 2021 at 2:00pm.
