It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Harding Braaten, who passed away peacefully on October 21, 2025 at the age of 92 with family at his bedside. Born on June 5, 1933, he was the devoted husband of Donna and loving father of Becky, Patricia and Douglas.
Harding was born and grew up on a farm near North Star, Alberta. At age 12 his parents were able to purchase a second-hand piano and at age 14 he went away to Three Hills where he continued piano training at Prairie High School and studied for four years at Prairie Bible Institute. This is where he met his future wife, Donna, as well as the Janz brothers who had formed a gospel quartet. He was asked to become the pianist for the Janz Quartet and in 1955 moved to Switzerland with the Janz brothers. A year later, Donna was asked to join them in Switzerland as Leo Janz’s secretary, and Harding and Donna were married in Basel in 1957. Harding worked with Janz Team Ministries (now TeachBeyond) for 38 years in Europe, traveling extensively across German-speaking Europe as pianist with the Janz Quartet in their crusade ministry. After semi-retiring to Canada in 1993, he continued traveling for the mission in Canada for another 10 years.
Harding was a man of strong faith in God and great courage, a gentle and kind soul. Although quiet and reserved, he was known for his big smile and sense of humour. He was devoted to his family, loved to play the piano, and enjoyed travelling, writing and making new friends. He enjoyed photography and also playing the organ.
He was predeceased by his parents, Nils and Louise; brothers Roy, Bert, Leonard, Lester and Ken; and by his wife, Donna. Harding will be lovingly remembered by his daughters Becky (Dave), Patricia (Ken); son Doug (Sheryl); grandchildren Jordan (Rebecca), Tyler (Carolyn), Donna (Brayden), Nathan, Tessa (Caleb), Trevor; 11 great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and many friends.
A service will be held on November 8, 2025 at 1:30 pm at Parkdale Grace Fellowship, Calgary, Alberta. View via livestream: https://youtube.com/live/HbRoN-PFxJI
