Hayden was born in Calgary on September 20, 2008. He was half Canadian and half Mexican, but his wonderful, big heart knew no borders.
From the moment we brought Hayden home, he brought nothing but joy into our lives. He was such a happy baby, toddler, and young boy. He could build huge LEGO sets in no time, and he learned video games and strategies like there was no tomorrow. He loved history and was an old soul who enjoyed talking to adults and having deep conversations about all kinds of topics.
Growing up, he loved dressing up in suits and role-playing with his daddy as “Mr. Customer.” He loved everything about firefighting, the army, soldiers, and police officers. Sometimes, he would wear his Halloween costumes all year long, especially his Spider-Man, firefighter, police officer, and soldier ones.
Hayden graduated from High School in June of this year. He completed his second Carpentry Internship this past summer and was enrolled to begin his Carpentry Apprenticeship in March 2027. He wanted to complete his apprenticeship to continue developing his skills and eventually apply to the Fire Department. His goal was always to help people and be there for others. He went back and forth between joining the Fire Department and becoming an Army Medic, but ultimately, his heart was set on becoming a Firefighter and, down the road, owning his own contracting company specializing in Carpentry.
Hayden loved his grandparents and always shared a special bond with his Grandpa Jack. He loved going golfing with him, hunting for spiders in Grandpa's basement, and listening to all the wonderful stories he had to tell.
Hayden inherited his Abue Ruperto's quick, witty sense of humour and always wanted to make everyone feel good or share a good laugh, especially with his friends and classmates. We recently learned what “farming aura” meant thanks to Hayden, which was so funny. Hayden was, without a doubt, a cool kid!
Hayden played guitar for several years and played hockey and soccer. He absolutely loved the water and swimming. He trained in boxing but ultimately chose martial arts as his sport. He practiced Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, and kickboxing, and over the years, he had the opportunity to train in Canada, Mexico, and Thailand. Through his MMA training, he developed into a strong, quick, and agile athlete. His physique was deceiving compared to the immense strength he possessed.
Hayden was passionate about helping people, standing up for others, doing the right thing, and stopping bullying. He didn't hesitate to put himself at risk to defend a friend or even save a drowning man from the ocean while on vacation in Mexico. Hayden was a young hero with no cape, and he never expected any recognition or acknowledgement for his actions. He said that was what he was born to do.
Hayden absolutely adored his dad. He always turned to him for support, advice, and guidance, and Dad made sure to teach him life skills that would carry him through life. Hayden's dad was one of the greatest loves of his life, and Hayden was one of his dad's greatest loves, too.
Hayden adored his siblings, Joel and Katie, and was absolutely devastated by the loss of his baby sister, Sarah. He loved Katie and always thought she was so cute and funny. He loved his brother Joel, whom he always looked up to. Hayden wanted to spend time with him, be like him, and even dress like him. His vision of success and his dream for the future was to walk through life alongside his brother and become Firefighters together.
The love Hayden had for his mom and dad was immeasurable. Lately, he had developed a funny obsession with seals, which led him to call his mom “Mamma Seal.” Every night before bedtime, he would show her videos of baby seals while they cuddled together. The bond he shared with both his parents was unlike any other: unique, deep, and incredibly strong. His emotional connection with his mom was especially strong and full of love, and somewhere along the way during his teenage years, she also became a “Bruh”.
Hayden was a wonderful son and brother who had so much love to give. He was an extremely loyal friend, usually referring to his friends as “brothers” or “bros.” If they needed Hayden, he was always there for them, especially during the hard times often saying things like “I am not leaving my brother alone through this”. Hayden wasn't someone who was only around for the good times; he always showed up when it mattered most.
He was also a wonderful grandson, nephew, and cousin. He was smart, quick, witty, funny, hardworking. He was a young man with a sweet, generous heart of gold, and he will be deeply missed by everyone whose lives he touched.
Hayden absolutely loved his time working at EllisDon Construction, where he helped build a school in Airdrie. He deeply appreciated the support, leadership, and guidance he received from his Superintendent, Mark; his Supervisor, Jason; Rodrigo, Johnny, Santiago, Alan; the entire team; and the 80+ trade partners he had the opportunity to work alongside.
Hayden was also very appreciative of his Vice Principal, Nashira; his School Counsellor, Alana; and the amazing teachers and wonderful administrative staff at W. H. Croxford High School who watched him grow and develop. Everyone was so supportive of him, always believed in him, and stood in his corner. They witnessed his growth from Grade 9 through Grade 12 and played an important role in his journey.
Hayden loved his friends and his first love in high school. He was incredibly loyal to them, cherished the time they spent together, and treasured all the fun and memories they shared.
Hayden had a fantastic medical team that cared for him, including Dr. Uduji, Dr. Oke, Dr. Enow, Carlin, Dr. Louder, Dr. Given, Dr. Balakrishnan, and Dr. Kopka. We are also grateful to the amazing Paramedics and Firefighters who responded to our call and all the emergency room staff at Peter Lougheed Centre who worked so hard to give Hayden the best care possible and the best chance at life.
We know they did everything in their power to help our boy. Although we may not yet have answers about what caused us to lose him, we know that Hayden was loved by so many people and that his life made a difference in this world. His light will continue to shine through the lives he touched, and he will forever be an inspiration to others.
Hayden will always be remembered with so much love by his dad, John; his mom, Karina; his older brother, Joel (Alayna ~ also Hayden’s sister by election); his baby sister Katie; his Abue Bertha; his aunties, uncles, and cousins, who loved him like a brother: Nancy (Darren), Mary (Juan ~ Mauri, Leo, and Sebastian), Jill (David), Livia (Miguel ~ Migue and David, his special pal), Alan, Eli (Moises ~ Rodrigo), Diego, Clau, Horte, and, of course, his second mom, Stacey.
He will also be deeply missed by all his family in Canada and Mexico, our family friends, and Hayden's many friends. This list is far from exhaustive, as so many people are grieving the loss of Hayden and carrying their own special memories of him in their hearts.
Hayden was predeceased by his baby sister, Sarah; his grandparents, Jack and Marg; his Abue Ruperto; his uncle Mauricio Gerardo; and our family dog, Riley, who was Hayden's furry buddy.
