Heather Lynn McGrandle-Demeyer was born April 26, 1949, in Westlock, Alberta, to John Alexander McNutt and Jane Henrietta Lien. In her early years, she grew up among the new oil fields of Alberta, where her father moved the family from town to town as drilling required. Through all the movement, one constant filled their homes, the ever-present sound of music created by her parents and later shared with her siblings. Music became part of Heather’s soul. She developed a deep love for singing and playing instruments, and she shared her music freely with everyone around her. She played trombone and later trumpet in various bands, sang and played guitar so beautifully that those who listened often felt the warmth of her spirit through every note. Her incredible memory allowed her to know hundreds of songs, which she played on the piano, guitar, trumpet, and penny whistle, bringing music and joy into every space she filled.
As a child, Heather loved dolls, and at the peak of her collection she proudly cared for 42 dolls. As a young woman, she began a career in the oil industry, working first as an office secretary at Imperial Oil in Red Deer and later for Home Oil in Swan Hills and as a drilling technician in Calgary.
Heather possessed a rare and thoughtful kindness. She a very loving and giving person who touched the lives of so many always careful that no one be offended or hurt in her interactions, making people feel seen and valued by remembering names, birthdays, and the relationships of extended families. She fiercely loved her family and found her greatest joy in the people closest to her heart. She had the uncanny knack of making everyone feel like her best friend, always the go-to person, sharing her compassion and insightful wisdom. For her, no problem was too large or small. She was a meticulous collector and shared a profound sense of humor with everyone she met. When she walked into a room, it felt brighter as she carried herself with charm, grace, boundless love and energy as she touched everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Heather married Gary McGrandle in 1968 and divorced in 1977. In 1984, she married Ferdinand Demeyer, the love of her life, a man she often said she would choose again and again in any lifetime. Their bond was one of deep devotion and enduring companionship, built on love, laughter, and a shared life together. (she kept the surname McGrandle for children so they would be the same)
Heather was predeceased by her mother and father, and by her brother Kenneth McNutt. She is survived by her beloved husband Ferdinand Demeyer, her brother Robert McNutt, her sister Karen McNutt, her children Trevor McGrandle (Michelle McGrandle, née Brennan) and Terri-Lynn Wylie, née McGrandle (Bradley Wylie), and four cherished grandchildren, Alayne McGrandle, Lauren McGrandle, Paige Wylie, and Kodiak Wylie, and her nephew James McNutt.
Heather’s music, laughter, and warmth filled the lives of those around her. Her charm, grace, and generous spirit will live on in the memories she created and the love she shared so freely with family and friends. She will be dearly missed, and her presence will be remembered always.
Heather died 19 Apr 2026 after a short illness in Foothills Country Hospice, Okotoks, Alberta.
