Herb passed away peacefully at the Linden Nursing Home on November 23, 2004 at the age of 97 years. Herb is lovingly remembered by his son, Allan; his second son, Frank and spouse Margaret; a grandson, Darren and companion Donna; a second grandson, Brent and fiance Marina; a granddaughter, Lana and husband Ted with two great grandsons, Devon and Everett. Herb is also survived by one brother, Walter; and predeceased by his loving wife Margaret in 1984, four brothers: James, Henry, John, Robert, and six sisters: Alice, Clara, Alma, Margaret, Mary and Jean. Herb was born on the “Klondike Ranch” east of Crossfield, Alberta in 1907. That same year, the Stewart family moved to a quarter section 1 1/2 miles south of Crossfield so the children would be closer to school. In 1915, when Herb was eight years old, the Stewart family moved again to a half section of land just north of the original Klondike Ranch homestead. After attending the nearby Rodney School, and surviving the 1918 flu epidemic and temperatures that same year at below 60 degrees, Herb continued to farm with his father. In 1927, the Stewart family moved back to the Klondike Ranch and farmed there until Herb’s father passed away in 1939. Herb married Margaret Victoria Murdoch on November 1, 1939. That same year, he purchased the south half section of land at 1-20-29-4 where he built a house, garage and barn. On January 10, 1941 Margaret gave birth to their first son, Herbert Allan Stewart and on December 22, 1944 they welcomed their second son, Frank Murdoch Stewart. Both Allan and Frank became farmers and together they farmed along with their father until he retired in 1986. Herb was a strong man with firm beliefs and values that were complimented by his compassion and sense of humour. He dedicated his life to his family and his work on the farm. Throughout his life, Herb didn’t seek a high profile in the community, but rather chose to help out his friends and neighbors quietly when there was a need.
