Hanna was born in Yangmingshan, Taiwan and was predeceased by her husband, Tien Lai Hsu. She was highly cherished and will be lovingly remembered by her children James (Marjorie) Hsu, Hua (Cayetana) Hsu, and Angela (John) Lin; nine grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
As a young woman in Taiwan, Hanna worked as a housekeeper to Japanese and American military families while also raising her own family. While doing so, she also became fluent in English and Japanese. In 1971, Hanna moved to Canada to help care for her grandchildren, and later her great-grandchildren. From then on, as she cultivated many friendships with families within the Taiwanese community in Edmonton, she quickly became everyone’s beloved “Amah”, and a pillar of the community.
Hanna’s greatest passion was sharing her love of food and cooking with family and friends. She loved sharing her expertise and delicious recipes, and enjoyed volunteering at the annual Edmonton Heritage Festival, cooking dishes for the Taiwanese pavilion to share with the greater community.
Hanna was admired for her strength, hard work, and independence. She devoted her life to caring for her family across Canada, the United States and Taiwan, and all those who knew her. She also loved to travel and continued her adventures back to Taiwan and around the world well into her nineties.
Hanna’s home for the last 6 years was at Wing Kei Care Centre Crescent Heights. Her family would like to thank their extraordinary staff and care team for their dedication, exemplary standard of care, and the unwavering kindness and compassion that was shown to Hanna throughout her time there. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Hanna’s name will be gratefully accepted online at: www.wingkeicarecentre.org.
