He married Judith on July 31, 1941 and began their inspiring and loving journey of 73 years until Judy’s passing in May 2015. Together they made a Christian home in Calgary and had one son Philip, and raised him to share their faith in God. Hugh and Judy welcomed a steady flow of relatives and visitors into their home and took in long term boarders who became lifelong friends. Hugh will always be remembered for his love of family and friends.
Hugh along with Judy served at the “Lighthouse Mission“ ministry in Calgary and provided countless sandwiches and coffee to women and men in need 4 nights a week over a 28 year period. Hugh led each service in song and prayer and provided counselling and God’s message for those who had lost hope. Hugh exemplified selflessness and devotion. In his younger years, Hugh raced pigeons and collected many trophy’s, he was an Ace’s City Wide softball champion in 1936, and loved playing hockey. Later, he became an avid golfer, curler and outdoorsman. Hugh spent many Saturdays either at the Inglewood Golf course where he was a member for 50 years, fishing the Jumping Pound, hunting Pheasants, or curling at the Big Four. Hugh was a successful millwright and began his career with the Caldwell Knitting Company in 1938, moving to Burns Meats in 1957, and lastly with Western Coop Fertilizer where he retired in 1982.
Hugh is survived by his daughter in law and five grandchildren: Natalie, Jeff (Chris), Annette (Rob), Gillian (Jay), Anton, and Danylo (Olivia). He is lovingly remembered by his seven great grandchildren: Oliver, Matthew, Stephanie, Jeff, Katie, Rachel, and Ian. He was predeceased by his son Phil (2018), and siblings: Tommy, Agnes, George, and William.
A Funeral Service will be held at Foster’s Garden Chapel, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary, Alberta (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery), on Friday, May 17 2019 at 2:00 PM.
