Roy Watson was born to Ormand & Irene (Morden) Watson at Brookdale, Manitoba, where his parents farmed. They purchased the present farm site NW ¼ -11-50-14-W2 in the fall of 1927 and moved there in March 1928. Roy lived on this quarter of land for the next 77 years until he moved to Pineview Lodge in September 2004.
He attended public school at Nipawin Rural and High School at Central School in Nipawin. After high school he worked on the family farm, for neighboring farmers and at a local sawmill/planer.
He met a young lady named Theresa Therres in 1941 at Gateway Service Station in Nipawin where she was employed. They were married in February 1945 and this union was blessed with sons Bob & Don. Roy and Theresa farmed together until Roy moved to Pineview. In their early years of farming things were tight so Roy went to work for the Nipawin Rural Telephone Company. “Telephone” Watson was employed 12 years as foreman of new line construction, repairs and maintenance.
He was very community oriented and served on numerous boards and committees, including Knox United Church (Codette), Codette and Nipawin Co-operatives, the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool (Codette), Nipawin Constituency CCF/NDP and the Community Funeral Home. His most involved volunteer work was with Credit Unions and the Community Funeral Home. He was instrumental in the amalgamation of the Codette Credit Union with the Nipawin Credit Union. He served on the board of directors of the two entities a total of 15 years, nine as president. Roy was a charter member of the Community Funeral Home and served for 13 years including time as president and funeral director.
He was also involved in agriculture and sports as a volunteer. He served on the Nipawin Agricultural Society as a board member and committee chairman for many years and as assistant leader of the Codette 4-H Beef Club. He also served as a chaperone for the Codette pee wee, bantam and midget hockey teams for many years driving to various area towns and villages with a car load of players.
Roy enjoyed all aspects of farming raising numerous types of grain, oilseed, forage crops, cattle and poultry. Roy and Theresa kept a flock of 300 hens for over 25 years and sold eggs. He liked horses which he farmed with in his youth and dogs were companions throughout his life.
In his later years he enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports. This was the fourth generation of sports enthusiasts as Ormand, Roy, Bob and Don all played sports for years. Roy particularly liked baseball and hockey and spent countless hours at Nipawin Hawks games for over 40 years.
Roy was predeceased by his parents Ormand & Irene Watson; parents-in-law John & Mary Therres; brothers-in-law: Albert, Joe, Charlie, Paul, John and Ed and sisters-in-law Ella and Marcy.
Roy is survived by his wife Theresa; sons Bob (Cec), Don (Helen); grandchildren Brett, Connie, Jesse and Shane; great grandchildren Shayla, Ashton and Isaiah; sisters-in-law: Irene, Dora, Ethel, Doreen and Theresa; brothers-in-law Jake (Margaret) and Fred and numerous nieces and nephews.
Roy’s was a full life well lived, based on co-operation loyalty, respect and honor. “We’ll hold you close within our hearts and there you will remain, to walk with us throughout our lives, until we meet again.”
