It is with a deep sadness that our family announces the passing of Janina Miernik at the age of 92 years at the St. Marguerite Manor Dulcina Hospice. She joined her late husband of 71 years, Franciszek Miernik, on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, just 4 weeks after his passing, to their journey to eternity.
Beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt to nephews and nieces in Poland, and a dear friend to many.
Janina was born on February 13, 1934, in Morsko, in the administrative district of Gmina Koszyce, Poland, to Władysława and Stanisław Luty.
Janina spent her elementary school years there with her brother Stanisław and sister Henryka. She moved to Kraków in 1950 to attend high school followed by commercial school to become a bookkeeper. While working in the office in Kraków-Nowa Huta, she met her future husband Franciszek, whom she married on November 8, 1954. Together they built a loving family and raised two children: daughter Danuta and son Zbigniew. In November 1981 they came to visit his son in Calgary, and since the martial law was in effect in Poland from December 13, 1981, until July 22, 1983, they decided to stay in Calgary and built their new life here. Janina and Franciszek celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary on December 26, 2025.
Janina and Franciszek were highly active in the Polish Church, being members of several groups.
Janina was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Her love for cooking and baking was well known to many.
She is survived by her children Danuta and Zbigniew (Mary); grandchildren Michelle (Tim), Anna (Altus), Mark (Lisa); great-granddaughter Peyton; and extended family in Poland.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Franciszek; parents Stanisław and Władysława; brother Stanisław; and sister Henryka.
She leaves behind a legacy her family will carry forward: resilience, honesty, kindness, and adaptability. She dedicated her life to caring for her family. Her strength, generosity and unwavering love will never be forgotten.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, 2111 Uxbridge Drive NW, Calgary on Friday, October 9th, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery.
