Juliana “Lucy” Prepolec passed away peacefully at Bow View Manor in Calgary, Alberta, after a lengthy battle with dementia. Lucy is survived by her devoted husband of 61 years, Vlado; son Charles (Kristen); brothers Seppi, Willie, Siggi, and Roman Hölzl; As well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Leo.
Lucy was raised in Graz, Austria, by the daughter (Angela Titz) of her adoptive parents, Leopold and Maria Thumfort, and where she met Vlado in 1957. They married in 1958 before embarking on an adventure to build a better life by immigrating to Canada in 1960, and settling in Calgary, Alberta. A talented seamstress by trade, she retired to become a full-time homemaker with the arrival of her son in 1966. Although, she continued to provide tailoring services to a small group of friends and clients from her home until her late 70’s.
Lucy enjoyed a variety of interests and skills including gardening, painting, decoupage, fly-tying, needlepoint and animal husbandry. She also spent considerable amounts of time as a devoted helpmate to her finishing-carpenter husband on jobsites, assisting with various detail-oriented tasks. Lucy was always a strong person, both physically, and in character, which served her well over the years. Particularly when Lucy and Vlado moved to an acreage in Okotoks, Alberta, where they built their home and outbuildings from the ground up, and began raising horses, cows, and chickens, before settling on sheep as their main livestock.
After the detection of her dementia in 2013, Lucy and Vlado moved to a custom-built suite in the home of their son. She had family looking after her needs until October 2018 when the loss of her mobility dictated the move to long-term care in Bow View Manor, where Lucy received warm, effective, and all-around excellent support from a first-rate staff of caregivers.
Lucy was a big-hearted generous individual, who could enjoy a glass of beer and a good laugh with anyone. She personally, and professionally, touched the lives of many. Lucy will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
Dementia is like a thief in the night, so in lieu of flowers, the family would strongly prefer donations be made directly to the Alzheimer Society of Calgary https://www.alzheimercalgary.ca/
A Memorial Service will be held at Foster’s Garden Chapel, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary, Alberta (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery), on Saturday, November 16, 2019 at 3:00 p.m.
