Kay Henderson of Calgary passed away on Friday, February 6, 2015 at the age of 93 years. Kay was born in Calgary on May 19, 1921. In 1941, she married Len Henderson and they began 65 years of married life while serving with the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) ; with stops in Patricia “Pat“ Bay, Dauphin, Ottawa and Lethbridge. Upon returning from the service, Len & Kay settled in Lethbridge; but returned to Calgary shortly thereafter to continue the family business, “Henderson Floral”. Kay & Len were very active in the Mount Pleasant Community Association serving as involved volunteers in many capacities. Kay & Len were also active members of Rosedale United Church, the Henderson Family helped to build the sanctuary “Brick by Brick”. Kay had a passion for bowling, card evenings & dancing - there was nary a Saturday that wasn’t spent with special friends and neighbor’s “cutting a rug”. After a late Saturday night – she always made a special Sunday dinner for the Family. Kay always placed the wants and needs of others first – she was always there with a hot cup of tea or coffee – and she shared her love of baking with friends , neighbor’s, family or anyone needing that cheer up visit, comforting and a chat. Len and Kay lived in their home on the North Hill for 63 years. Kay was predeceased by her husband Len in 2007, son David, her parents John & Barbara Melvin; sister Barbara (Bunty) Tyndale, and special nephew Jack (Florence) McKenzie. Kay is survived by her four sons Mel (Heather), Ron (Peter), Ross (Sandie) and Kevin (Judy). She is also survived by five Grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Kay will be fondly remembered by those who knew her as the “#1 Fan” of the Calgary Stampedes & Calgary Flames. Kay embodied true western values when a “Friend will always be a Friend”, and when someone is down on their luck, you picked them up and “dusted them off”, with a kind gesture. The Henderson Family wishes to “Thank“all the special people who assisted her while she was a resident of the Harbours of Newport, Chinook Care Center; and her special friend Brenda who stopped by for a daily visit. We would also like to thank the Emergency Room Personnel at the Rockyview General Hospital for their compassionate care in her last few hours. In her spirit of giving back, the family would like you to consider a donation to a charity of your choice in lieu of flowers. A Celebration of Life will be held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Saturday, May 16, 2015 at 2:00 p.m.
