Our Dad was a kind and generous man, humble and gracious to everyone he encountered in his lifetime. Along with our mom, Dad showed us the value of hard work, taught us the importance of integrity, how to enjoy the simple pleasures of life, but above all, strength and love of family.
Dad was born in Canton, China, and immigrated to Canada in 1955. Upon his arrival, he began his career in the restaurant industry as a dishwasher. It was during his time in Drumheller, Dad found his calling as a talented cook- teaching himself with the help of cookbooks and observing others.
Dad and our mom, Mee Yuk, were married July 1962 and settled in Drumheller, AB. The family would grow over the next five years as they welcomed the arrival of their two daughters and a son. With the retirement of his father-in-law in 1970, they would return to Calgary so that Dad could oversee the family's stake in our grandfather's restaurant - the Modern Cafe. The following year the family was complete with the birth of their youngest son.
Dad worked long hours in those early years to provide for his family. Eventually he was able to realize his dream of owning his own restaurant, the Horned Heifer in 1980, partnering with his brother and family friend. After the sale of the Horned Heifer, Dad was employed for several years at the Crossroads Hotel. Prior to his retirement, Dad's career as a cook came full circle as he returned to Drumheller, working for family friends at the Diana Restaurant.
In his retirement, Dad spent many hours socializing with "the old buggers" over coffee, early morning walks up to Nose Hill Park, and trips to China, Ottawa and Las Vegas. He enjoyed cooking and baking and always made extra to share with family and friends. With the arrival of his two great grandchildren, Dad looked forward to spending time with them - treasuring every moment.
Dad is lovingly remembered by his children, Susan (Victor), Lynda, Gary, and daughter-in-law Deborah. He was a proud Gong-Gong to Alexandra (Jared) and Stephanie (Shane) and a patient, gentle great grandfather to Maeve and Silas.
Dad was predeceased by his beloved wife of 59 years, Mee Yuk, son Danny, and brother Kwok Fun.
