Lina Marie Chan

Lina Chan passed away in the arms of her daughter on August 11, 2026, in Calgary, Alberta, at the age of 73.

Lina was born to Elmer and Ida (St. Coeur) Rousselle in Tracadie on March 8, 1953, and grew up in Rivière-du-Portage, New Brunswick.

Lina attended Portage River School (in French) from 1960–1969 and graduated from Kamloops Secondary School (in English) in 1971, prior to attending Cariboo College from 1971–1973. In 1992 and 1993, she continued her lifelong quest for knowledge at Alberta Vocational College, where she received the Diversified Temporary Service Award and Outstanding Adult Learner Awards for her academic dedication.

In 1974, at the age of 21, Lina moved into her first house on her own in Kamloops, British Columbia, and then moved to Calgary, Alberta, in 1975. In 1977, she began her lifelong journey as an entrepreneur by starting Acute Drapery in Calgary, while simultaneously working at a number of restaurants. On May 8, 1982, Lina married Raymond Chan, and on June 17, 1988, they were proud to welcome their daughter, Katryna.

In 1993, Lina began working at Alberta Vocational College, a career in which she was honoured to serve for twenty-five years until her retirement in 2016. During this time, she was proud to become a member of Toastmasters, where she delivered touching, poignant, and humorous stories while developing her confidence and public speaking skills. Once retired, Lina spent her time continuing to learn, including learning to do taxes in 2018, and seeking out adventures with friends, whether it was travelling, breathtaking wildlife photography, or trying out new restaurants.

Lina was always on the go, even creating a “Lina’s Liver & Onion Club” to seek out the best dishes in Calgary. Outgoing, caring, and always good for a laugh, Lina would do anything to lift spirits. She will be greatly missed, but would want her loved ones to remember the good times and smiles more than anything else.

Lina is survived by her beloved daughter, Katryna; her brothers, Lorenzo Rousselle and Martin Rousselle; and her nieces and nephews, Dennis Sonier, Réal Roussel, Michelle Young, Nicole Rousselle, Stéphane Sonier, and Chantal Short.

Lina was predeceased by her adopted grandmother, Kathryn (Nini); her parents, Elmer Rousselle and Ida Rousselle; her sisters, Jeannette Sonier, Mary Rousselle, and Linda (Tunne) Short; her brothers, Jean-Marie (John) Rousselle, Elmer (Junior) Rousselle, and Martin Rousselle; her husband, Raymond Chan; and a number of close friends whom she cared about deeply.
