
Lois was born on March 7, 1938, in Cochrane, Alberta where she grew up on a nearby farm. She had a lifelong love of music and earned degrees in piano and singing from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto.
In 1958 she earned her Music Degree in piano from the University of Alberta. In 1965 she obtained a Bachelors Degree in Education from the University of Calgary. Lois completed her Masters Degree in Educational Administration in 1979.
Lois’ 40 year teaching career began in a one room school house where she taught all subjects to many elementary children who often referred to her as “Mom”. As a teacher and a principal, Lois promoted the growth and development of many students. Lois was a leader, volunteer and artist. She was provincial head of the Grand Chapter of Alberta, Order of the Eastern Star and also a leader in the Daughters of the Nile. She represented Alberta and Canada at several international conferences. Lois contributed to the Friends of Heritage Park, the Glenbow Museum, and the Kiwanis Music Festival. She sang in operettas as a soloist at the Coste House, and as a soprano for 35 years with the Calgary Philharmonic Chorus. Lois enjoyed many activities such as curling, golf, skiing and hiking. She married Douglas William Brown in 1958 and they remained together for 65 years.
Lois is survived by her son, daughter, granddaughter, and brother, as well as nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and husband.
A Memorial Service will be held at Foster’s Garden Chapel, 3220-4 Street NW, Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Monday, November 10, 2025, at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made directly to Make a Wish Canada to support care for children.
