Lou was preceded in death by his parents, Louis & Albertine, his 2 brothers, Camille & Roy, and his daughter-in-law, Vi (nee Volk) (Dennis). Lou is survived by his loving wife of 75 years, Marion (nee Olson), and their 4 children, 8 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Dennis Lamy (children Shelley (Stefan), Stacey (Jason) & Jaime; grandchildren Kaden, Emma, Reese & Rylie); Alvin Lamy (wife: Betty) (children Sheila (Jen) & David; grandchildren, Oscar, Olive, Cole); Carol Clegg (husband: Charlie) (daughter, Kristy (Greg); grandchildren Meirah, Lexi, Kara) and Brenda Pesonen (husband: Harry) (children Adam & Robin (Brittany); grandchildren Chloe, Shane, Adrian, Bella & Jaxin).
Lou was born and raised in St. Rose du Lac, Manitoba. The eldest of 3 sons, he had fond memories of his childhood on the homestead. He loved animals, especially horses, and was a hard worker right from the start, often trapping animals to sell on his way to and from school. In October 1943, he joined the army because he had finished all the fieldwork on the farm as a hired hand and there were no other jobs available. He very quickly moved on to train as a paratrooper, eventually heading overseas to fight courageous battles in WW2. He parachuted into Normandy, France on D Day – June 6, 1944 and on Christmas Day 1944 the battalion was ferried to Belgium to fight in the Ardennes Battle of the Bulge in the perishing cold. On March 24, 1945 during Operation Varsity, his battalion parachuted across the Rhine River into Germany.
Upon returning home in 1945, he married the love of his life, Marion, and they began their life and family together, spending time with their families in Manitoba before moving to Alberta in 1965. Lou had a long career with the Federated Co-Op in both Manitoba and Alberta. Once in Calgary, they put down roots within the Bowness community and Shepherd of the Hills Church.
Lou was known for his reliable, no-nonsense, punctual manner, and would offer his time and efforts to anyone that needed it, be it a ride to church or help with a handy project. Lou and Marion enjoyed many happy years of traveling in their motorhome, fishing on the west coast, camping (Moose Lake), fishing & hunting with their children, grandchildren, and friends, making wine, and cruising up to Alaska. They also loved their time spent in Fairmont, B.C. for 40+ years with family. The Lamy family will miss their cherished and adored patriarch. The world feels a little emptier without our Dad, Grandpa and Great Grandpa in it.
For many years, Lou, as a war veteran, was involved with the paratrooper reunions and June 6th ceremonies at the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion Monument (Siffleur Falls). His ashes will travel up the “mountain” and become a Guardian of the Monument.
To Lou - on behalf of all of us - thank you for fighting for the freedoms that we enjoy!!!!
Our deepest gratitude to Colonel Belcher Care Centre for caring for our beloved Lou in his final months.
