Born in Emmersdorf in Kärnten, Austria on June 14, 1927 she lived her early life dreaming of and fulfilling her desire to travel and see the world. Her “Wanderlust” was cured when she arrived in Calgary, Alberta in May, 1953. Destiny brought Maria to her new home in Canada—where the mountains and culture of her homeland remained an important backdrop to a new life that was full of open vistas, blue skies, new people and great opportunities. Maria was quick to adapt to life in Canada, marrying John Mick on August 21, 1954. Together they built a successful life that was grounded in family, a wide circle of friends and hard work. She was a devoted wife and mother and an astute business woman who used a “common sense” approach.
Maria’s special gift was her ability to connect with people--she looked for and saw the best in all, listened with her heart and offered her wisdom and mentorship to those who sought it. Maria had a rich life that was filled with many faithful friends and family members. She also had a great love for animals especially her four-legged friend and fitness partner Nellie.
Maria was preceded by her husband John (2005), her parents Theresia (nee Leitner) and Anton Assinger; as well as her siblings Franzl, Zita, Anton, Vinzent, Rosa and Mathilda. Even though Maria was the last of her childhood family, she kept them deep in her heart throughout her life. She is survived by her children Maria (Robert) Steinborn; John (Mary) Mick; grandchildren and great grandchildren; Danielle (Warren) Everett and Breanna Himech; David (Lisa) Mick; and Jennifer (Jordan) Julie and Jase Fletcher; Helmut (Hilde) Lackner a special cousin; in-laws, Josef (Helga) Mick, Dora Platzer and many nieces and nephews in Europe and Canada.
From the moment of her first breath to her last, Maria lived and loved her life; it was rich and filled with many devoted friends and family. Maria leaves all of us with a legacy of memories and a powerful example of a life well lived.
