Maria Smialek (nee Szczepanik) passed away, in a state of grace, on December 30, 2011 at the age of 88 years. She will be lovingly remembered by her children Jozef (Maria) Witkowski and Alicja (Leszek) Dobrzanski; her grandchildren Magdalena Witkowska, Tanya Dobrzanski, Marcin (Katarzyna) Witkowski and Monica (Matthew) Bruce and her great granddaughter Gabriela Witkowska. Maria was born and grew up in Poland. She was the eighth and youngest child of Anna and Franciszek Szczepanik. She married her husband, Michal Witkowski (1916 – 1967), and had her two children, Jozef and Alicja. Maria worked as an economist until 1980, when she immigrated to Canada. In Calgary she met and married Jan Smialek (1930 – 1991). Maria was a member of the Polish-Canadian Seniors’ Club and served, for a time, as the club’s president. She volunteered with the Seniors’ Club, the Polish-Canadian Association, and with her parish, Our Lady Queen of Peace. Maria was a devoted mother and grandmother. She loved to read, dance, garden, cook, play cards and travel with her family.

Relatives and friends are invited to a Prayer Service held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at 8:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish, 2111 Uxbridge Drive N.W., Calgary, Alberta on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery. Bus service will be provided from the Funeral mass to the Interment and returning to the reception at Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish Hall. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made directly to Livestrong, (www.Livestrong.org). Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family via the website www.fostersgardenchapel.ca.
