It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mimi Daniel on Thursday, June 18, 2026, after a long and bravely fought battle with ovarian cancer. Mimi was a beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, and friend whose kindness, warmth, and vibrant spirit touched countless lives.
Mimi was born on February 6, 1961 in Calgary, AB to parents Peggy and Jack Yucytus. A lifelong Calgarian, Mimi built a rich and meaningful 25-year career at the University of Calgary, where she was a cherished member of the learning community. She retired as Department Manager of Communication and Culture and English for the Faculty of Arts, leaving behind a legacy of mentorship, leadership, and genuine care for students, colleagues, and friends alike.
After meeting Bill, she quickly became one of rodeo's biggest fans, happily spending weekends following her husband and his friends to rodeos across the region.
Outside of work, Mimi lived life to the fullest. Her social life revolved around the people and activities she loved, particularly through her deep connection to the Calgary Winter Club. Whether she was running half marathons (everywhere from Banff to Las Vegas), picking up a tennis racquet (she did so nearly every day), cheering from the sidelines, or gathering with friends, Mimi embraced every opportunity to be active, engaged, and surrounded by those she cared about.
A fierce competitor with a playful spirit, Mimi had an uncanny ability to pick winners and was legendary among family and friends for her sports wagers. She also never passed an opportunity for a trip to Las Vegas, where she could often be found at the craps and blackjack tables, or slots, enjoying every minute of the action.
Mimi's infectious laugh, radiant smile, and vibrant personality could light up any room. She treasured the countless hours spent with friends around their favourite table at the CWC's R&R Lounge, sharing stories, laughter, and friendship.
Above all else, Mimi will be remembered for the way she treated people. She possessed a rare gift for making others feel valued, loved, and understood. Her compassion, empathy, generosity, and unwavering kindness left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her. She was truly one of the sweetest souls imaginable, and her absence will be deeply felt by all whose lives she touched.
Mimi is lovingly remembered by her husband, Bill Daniel; her sons, Josh and Zach Silbernagel; her stepchildren, Dallas and Matt (Divya) Daniel; her granddaughter, Mia; her siblings, Melissa (Craig) Wiwchar, Marty (Kari) Yucytus, and Michele (Steve) Zanini; and her nieces and nephew, Sarah (Nick) Stevenson, Samantha (Andrew) Leal, and Jack Wiwchar.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Calgary Winter Club, 4611 14 St NW, Calgary, on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. sharp. Doors will open at 1:30 p.m.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the many wonderful health care professionals, especially those at the Arthur Child & Foothills Hospital, for their commitment to Mimi's journey; your dedication, humanity, and compassion are a gift to the families you serve.
