Evelyn was born to Frank and Martha (Chilton) Kerr, the middle of three children, on their homestead west of Claresholm, AB. School days were spent riding her pony to Schaffer School, a one-room school house, accompanied by her brothers, Thomas and Howard, and their teacher who boarded at the Kerr farm. Evelyn was a diligent student and an excellent hockey player. In her teen years she joined the Claresholm Girls Hockey Team and played against teams in all the surrounding towns. Following her high school graduation, Evelyn and Tom moved to Calgary where they graduated from Garbet’s Business College. Since the family had listened to Canada’s National Back to the Bible Hour for many years, the two farm kids naturally began to attend the Prophetic Bible Institute, with Howard joining them later. Following graduation, Evelyn began working in the Radio Sunday School office and attending Bible classes in the evening and graduated in 1946. Evelyn liked to tell the story that on one occasion when Premier Aberhart was visiting from Edmonton, she was asked to go to the Palliser Hotel and take dictation; quite an assignment for a timid girl. Sam Street and Evelyn Kerr met at the Prophetic Bible Institute; they married and soon built their home in northwest Calgary. They enjoyed many camping vacations in the Canadian Rockies and also traveled to Alaska, Britain and Greece. Israel, Egypt and Turkey were also on Evelyn’s travel schedule. Old Testament studies were her specialty and in 1949 Evelyn began to teach at Berean Bible College. She also was a bookkeeper and an office administrator at the fledgling school. Following retirement, Evelyn continued in Pioneer Girls Camp Cherith having been involved in this ministry since 1960 at the Bethel Baptist Church, on city wide committees and provincial weekend workshops. Her love for the Old Testament continued as she taught for many years at Harris House. Evelyn’s brothers, Thomas and Howard, have predeceased her. Evelyn will be remembered by her nieces and nephews; by students enriched by her Bible teaching; by campers for her expertise in outdoorsmanship and leathercraft; by camp leaders for leading morning devotions as well as her close friends for many things, but especially for her prayer life and faithfulness to her Lord and his word.
