It is with deep sadness that the family of Betty Ullberg announces her passing on Wednesday, August 08, 2018 at the age of 81 years. She was a loving and thoughtful grandmother, mother, sister, devoted wife and special friend.
Betty was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Mary and Daniel Bissett. She spent her youth in Headingley, Manitoba, where her father was the constable in charge of the RCMP detachment there and her mother was a school teacher. The family then moved to Kirkfield Park and then St. James, where she finished her elementary and high school. Betty pursued her studies, graduating in the Class of 59A, from the Winnipeg General Hospital, as a Registered Nurse.
Betty married her true love Erven “Gus” Ullberg and they both traveled together, early in their careers, to places like Kelsey, Manitoba, Montreal and Sault Ste Marie, Michigan. Both of them loved to work and travel, around North America, in whatever camper they could afford, always visiting family and making friends along the way. They loved to have a family dog, particularly Chima, Tiffany and Dookie, by their sides. Betty was always grateful to become part of the big Ullberg family and fit in seamlessly with the 10 Es.
Betty pursued her career as a RN with great passion. She was an advocate for patients, families and fellow nurses and mentored many staff along the way. She worked at Riverview Health Centre, formerly Winnipeg General Hospital, for most of career, proudly retiring as a Nursing Unit Manager and always staying actively involved with her WGH Alumni.
My mom had the most tenacity of any one I know. Even with her health problems, she would not accept any limitations. She loved to be out and about and always ready for a party. Her and my dad were Jets fans and loved to be surrounded by family and friends. Her friends would say she was kind, generous and full of life. Her sisters would say she was smart and always a burst of energy. She pursued being a homemaker with as much heart as she did her career. She loved to bake and cook and entertain. She had a love of music and many hobbies like sewing and gardening. In her retirement, she took up painting and loved to find a unique picture and create it on canvas. She was always encouraging others, with her “can do” attitude.
Betty is lovingly remembered by her family. Her daughter, Hansine Ullberg Kostelecky (Michael), plus their kids Cameron, Rachael, Alexander, Chase and Kira; her son Kjell Ullberg, and Daniel Hardock (Gail), their children Clayton and Gisele Hardock and Angela and Don Richards, plus their children, Ailsa, Rainee, River, Lorelai and Kaidance. Betty loved being a grandma to Hansine’s children, Alexander Cliche and Kira Kostelecky.
Betty was also very close to her sisters, Jean Bissett and Catherine (Paco) Alvarez and their family Andrew and Jennifer Alvarez, plus children Anya and Daniel, and Carmen Alvarez.
A Family and Friends Visitation, will be held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4th Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery), on Saturday, August 18th between 7:00pm and 9:00pm.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, on Sunday, August 19th at 11:00am. She will be interred, with Gus, in the Queen’s Park Cemetery, immediately after the service.
If friends so desire, memorial donations in Betty’s name may be made to the Winnipeg General Hospital Alumni Association. Like being a mom, once a Nurse, always a Nurse.
Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family via the website www.fostersgardenchapel.ca.
