Born in Glasgow, Scotland on May 1, 1929 she was the youngest of eleven children and immigrated to Canada through Pier 21 in Nova Scotia during the early 1950s, eventually settling in Toronto, Ontario. Initially working as a seamstress, May married and became a wonderful loving mother to four children, her grandchildren and great grandchildren. An avid traveler her whole life, she began her travels as a ten year old child being relocated out of Glasgow to avoid WW2 air raids.
Having limited education, May took night school courses in “New Math” as well as piano lessons so she could help her children with school and music. May faithfully attended the United Church, worked on the daffodil campaign to battle cancer in Toronto as well as working as a District Returning Officer for municipal elections. She finished her career working to help people to find employment with the Learning Enrichment Foundation in Toronto for many years.
May traveled to Thailand, Dubai, Barbados, Kenya and Tanzania to name a few places, as well as many trips to Alberta and even the Yukon to visit her children.
In her late eighties May relocated to Calgary to be closer to her children.
May enjoyed her family, dancing, and a gin and tonic. She was incredibly patient, caring and gentle and had a joyous spirit that came through in her laugh and her smile.
May is lovingly remembered and will be greatly missed by daughters Fiona and Janet; sons Bruce and Robert; grandchildren Morgan, Emily, Duncan, Conor, and Alexis as well as great grandchildren Skye and Xander.
Cremation was in care of Foster’s Garden Chapel.
