Mei Wah Wong, born Mei Wah Tang on January 13, 1937, in the village of Wingsingli near Kaiping, Guangdong, China, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2025, in Calgary, Alberta. Mei's life was a testament to her resilience and unwavering dedication to her family, leading her on a remarkable journey from war-torn China to Canada.
Mei's early life was marked by hardship and perseverance. After surviving the Japanese occupation, she and her family moved to Hong Kong where her father worked at a violin manufacturer. There, she attended night school and managed the household duties, including shopping and cooking, as both of her parents worked late. When Mei’s father opened his own violin-making business in the new communist China, in 1951, Mei and her mother left Hong Kong to join him in Guangzhou.
She returned to Hong Kong for better job opportunities in the mid fifties, living with her aunt. Her mom and younger brother joined her a year later.
In 1958, Mei embarked on a new chapter in life, flying to Vancouver, BC, to marry Fred Wong, an arrangement made by an aunt. The same day she arrived, they married and boarded a train to Golden, BC, where Fred owned a restaurant.
Mei and Fred began their family in Golden, welcoming their first two children, Norman and Ted. In 1963, the family moved to Salmon Arm, where they had three more children: Linda, Roy, and Brenda. From 1965 to 1989, Mei and Fred co-owned and operated Poplar Grove Restaurant. Mei's role included food preparation and providing
warm, personable service to customers. After a brief retirement in 1989, they opened Fortune Restaurant in 1990, running it until their final retirement in 1995.
Mei's passions included gardening and cooking. She cultivated vegetable and flower gardens that brought her great joy. She was a talented cook who prioritized feeding her family well, often preparing delicious meals and making nourishing soups.
In 2007, Mei and Fred moved to Calgary to help care for their grandchildren. Their home became a hub for family gatherings, where Mei's welcoming nature shone through as she hosted friends and family.
Mei is predeceased by her husband, Fred Wong. She is survived by her brother, Allan (Jean), her children Norman (Dianne), Teddy (Sandy), Linda (Fraser), Roy, and Brenda (Andy), and six grandchildren.
