Michael Patrick Hartney

Mike Hartney passed away peacefully at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary, AB on Sunday, August 16. He lived every day of his 80-year life, and he left the world feeling optimistic, just as he always lived.

Mike was born in Regina, SK to Joseph and Mary Hartney (nee Murphy). He was the second eldest of five siblings, a member of the lively Hartney-Murphy clan that filled the streets of Moose Jaw with energy, mischief, and spirit. He went on to become a teacher and then have a successful career as a lawyer, providing legal advice and services to many friends and family.

Mike was fascinated by history, enjoyed literature, and had many other unique interests. He loved to travel, especially to Europe, and one of his most memorable adventures was completing the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage in Spain. In retirement, he was able to share his passion for airplanes as a volunteer at the Hangar Flight Museum and his enthusiasm for greeting and guiding visitors made him an outstanding White Hatter airport greeter.

Mike was known for his unwavering generosity, kindness and resilience. Mike found immense joy in his family, was a devoted husband and father and was always there when he was needed. Despite his deteriorating health, he persevered and always remained grateful and positive. We would like to thank his many care providers, especially Dr. Ejeckam and the peritoneal dialysis clinic.

Mike is survived by his loving wife Valerie; children, Bridget (Toby) and Laura (Grant); grandchildren, Julian, Sam, Stella and Frankie; siblings Joanne, Dan, Tish and Gerard and extended family and an extensive network of cherished friends and colleagues. He was preceded in death by his infant sister Loretta, mother Mary and father Joseph.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Foster's Garden Chapel Funeral Home & Crematorium, 3220 4 Street NW, Calgary, AB, on September 2, 2026, at 2:00PM.
