OBITUARY

Niels Peter Hansen

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Niels, on Sunday, June 14, 2020 at the Foothills Medical Center at the age of 66, after a short but valiant battle with neuroendocrine cancer.

Niels was born in Viemose, Denmark where he grew up and completed his technical painters training before immigrating to Calgary, Canada on July 10, 1975. Niels met his wife Carol at the Danish Canadian Club and they married on November 12, 1977. They had one son, Erik.

Niels was a painter all his life; he successfully ran his own company until his retirement. He loved refereeing hockey, playing golf, cards, gardening, travel, and helping Erik build his house. Niels was a proud father and Far Far (grandfather), and a very hard worker. His greatest joy was his granddaughter Freya and looking after Erik’s dogs, Dexter and Lucy.

Niels will be lovingly remembered by his wife Carol, son Erik (Meaghan) and granddaughter Freya. He is also survived by his sister Anne (Jim) and family, brother Poul-Erik and family. As well as his family in Denmark; brothers Axel, Knud and family; sister–in-law Gurli, niece Maibritt and family. Niels is predeceased by his parents Hilda and Carl Axel, brothers Kaj and Tage.

A special thanks to Niels’ Care team over the last half year; Dr. S. Goyal, Dr C. Card, the staff of the Foothills Medical Center, specifically the staff on Unit 36 where he spent his final days.

The family will be holding a private service, live and recorded streaming will be available. For more information contact the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Calgary Health Trust at http://www.calgaryhealthtrust.ca/, memorial fund on behalf of Niels Hansen.

You worked hard all your life! Rest in Peace Niels.

Sending gentle thoughts during these difficult days. So sad to hear of Niels' passing. I'll always remember Niels for his cheerful, happy-go-lucky, engaging personality! "No time on earth is long enough to share with those we love, or to prepare our hearts for good-bye. May time soften the pain until all that remains is the comfort of memories and love."
