Our beloved mother, Norma Jean Duncan, passed away at 91 years of age, due to complications of lung cancer. She loved her family unconditionally, and was a devoted partner to Robert, her husband of 72 years.
She is survived by her daughters Shawn, Tracy (Heather) and Kelly (Cam); and also, by three adored grandchildren Ashley, Cody and Sara (Alex). Norma was predeceased by her son Joel.
Born in Melrose, New Brunswick, she spent much of her youth there and later moved to Nova Scotia. Her heart was always in the Maritimes where she met Robert, who was in the navy, and where her four children were born. Norma was a career woman ahead of her time; she trained as a hair stylist and had a long career in that field.
The family moved to Calgary in 1962. She dearly missed her family then living in Ontario. She missed her mother, Lillian Dunn and her siblings, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She had a busy life in Calgary, raising children and working full-time. She was socially active with the extended Duncan family and with friends. Norma enjoyed golf, gardening, art, and travelling. She was a proud Canadian and a proud Maritimer.
She was also a deeply faith filled person and was involved in organizations such as Inn From the Cold at Saint Luke’s Catholic Church. She attended St. Luke’s and contributed her time and talent there for many years.
Norma suffered from dementia at the end of her life, and although she faced many challenges, she retained her sense of humour and her love of people. She often shouted out a hearty “I love you!” accompanied with a kiss of the hand to the delight of everyone around her.
We wish to thank Heather Collie for her loving care and friendship to our mother.
Mom will always be in our hearts; we hope her spirit will never be far away from the “seabound coast” and soar among the mountains and the sea.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Luke’s Catholic Church, 1566 Northmount Drive N.W., Calgary on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at 11:00 a.m.
The family would be grateful if people chose to donate to one of the following charities in Norma’s memory: Inn From the Cold, the Canadian Red Cross, Canadian Cancer Society, or Society of St. Vincent de Paul.
