On Friday July 4, 2025, the Johnsen family lost its matriarch and Calgary lost one of its greatest supporters when Paddy Johnsen passed on from this world to join her husband, her parents, and her dear sisters on the other side.
Born to Jean and Allister McGregor on the 25th of April 1937, Paddy grew up with and remained close to her beloved sisters, Peggy and Linda. A lifelong Calgarian, Paddy loved everything about the city she called home.
She attended Crescent Heights High School, where she met her high school sweetheart, Dan Edward Johnsen. They married on June 1, 1957, and shared a loving partnership that spanned six decades. Paddy is survived by three children (Trent, Tammie & Todd); seven grandchildren (Danny, Angela, Quinn, Katherine, Matthew, Andrew & Kate); and one great-granddaughter (Calla).
Paddy’s life revolved around her family and their friends. Entertaining company, 5-pin bowling, neighbourhood bridge, and anything for her kids. When she had her husband and her family close, her happiness was contagious – through the school years, on family holidays, and the annual Christmas Eve Open House. As her children grew, Paddy naturally evolved from doting mother to loving grandmother – even leaving Calgary sometimes to visit her expanding family.
As her grandchildren became adults, Paddy and Dan spent more time with each other and the dear friends they had made through work, Rotary and community. When she lost her dear husband in 2018, it created a void that would never be filled. We’re comforted in knowing that she has finally been reunited with the love of her life. Paddy will be remembered for her devotion to family, her warmth, humour, generous hospitality, and the strong community friendships she built throughout her life.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Paddy’s nieces Debbie Ferguson and Vicki McLaughlin for their constant support, as well as to the staff at Staywell Manor and to the compassionate nurses at Rockyview Hospital for their exceptional care and kindness.
As per Paddy’s wish, cremation has taken place, and a service will be held at a later date.
