He will always be missed by Christina, his partner of 24 years, his daughter Victoria, the light of his eyes, and his little monster of a puppy, Ebony, who brought many smiles to his face. He is survived by Ellen and Alex, his in-laws, his sister-in-law Andreea, and family both here in Canada and in Europe, Manuela and Andreea in particular. Paul is predeceased by his mom Marieta, brother Victor (Ana), and dad Gheorghe.
He will always be remembered by his closest friends, near and far as a person who loved to tell stories, dance, enjoy nature, and, if it needed fixing, he was the man! His craftsmanship, found throughout many a friend’s home, now serves as just another reminder of his passion and character. The emptiness he leaves behind, the lives he touched, and the memories he is part of will forever live with his family and friends.
Paul was his own person, set in his ways but quick to be by the side of anyone who needed his help. You could not help but love him, even in the most trying of moments.
Born on August 7, 1954, in Bucharest, Romania, he was the youngest of two children, and he shared an especially close relationship with his mom. He spent many summers at Greci, surrounded by cousins, nieces and nephews. Many of his favorite memories of his childhood were of tree climbing, swimming in the river, bike riding and being in nature, often with his cousin Petrica.
Later in life, he met Mr. Minescu, who shaped his career choice. They shared a love of nature, alpinism, bike rides, hikes, and most of all, geomatics. They, and at times joined by Mario, spent spring, summer and fall completing surveying projects all over Romania. He cherished and shared memories of that time right until the end.
In 1990, Paul moved to London, England. His time there was filled with memories of his brother and sister-in-law, and many people who became life-long friends (Gabriel, Dalvina, Liviu). This new path would eventually bring him to Canada in 1995. Here he reunited with friends from his university days and started the last chapter of his life!
Along the way, he also met Ethann, who became like a brother to him over the decades they worked together, including the 5 years they shared an office. They could often be found working on various projects, or sharing a beer on the deck they built together. They continued to share many conversations in the last two weeks that Paul was in the hospital.
Paul’s work in geomatics continued in Canada, eventually landing him with Kambi, where he felt most at home. He took pride in his work with the company, which frequently took him to sites across the prairies and the US, allowing him to make new friendships that lasted throughout the years.
In 2002, on a nice summer’s eve, Paul came into our lives. That journey would last 24 years, two cancer battles, graduations, a puppy purchase, and countless sunrises and sunsets. Days and evenings filled with laughter, sometimes tears, jokes, stories, fights, and memories.
We lost Paul after a valiant year-long battle with stage 4 GI cancer. There was not a day that passed during the year following his diagnosis where he stopped fighting. No matter the mountain, he climbed, he fell, and he climbed again. Sadly though, the battle was eventually lost. We are forever grateful to the most amazing team of doctors who were by his side right up until the end - Dr J. Zeppieri, Dr V. Tam, and Dr A. Surmawala. We would also like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the dedicated team of nurses on floors 10 and 12 of the Arthur Child Cancer Centre, especially Sandra W., who started and ended this journey alongside us.
Paul has left a hole in the lives of many. We have had the privilege of being his family, and we miss him every single day. We see him in the green grass, in the wildflowers, in the music he so loved to dance to, and in the silence that fills the empty space he has left behind. He stayed full of life and laughter up until the very end, refusing to let his diagnosis define him. Though he is no longer here to share his stories and wisdom, we trust that his spirit will live on in those who were lucky enough to know him, and his work will continue to speak for him for many more years to come.
