It is with such sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Phyllis Mary Zombor (Kelly), 89, of Calgary Alberta, at Monterey Seniors Village in Calgary on January 4, 2026 after a courageous battle with dementia, and it’s complications. Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, Michael “Bruce” Zombor. Phyllis was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island on April 14, 1936 to Wilfred and Mary Kelly of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. The family moved to Montreal, Quebec when Phyllis was 5 years old.
Phyllis is survived by her three children, Norman (Beverley) Zombor, Brenda (Rod) Bowes, and Kelly (Juniper) Zombor. She will also hold a precious place in the hearts of her grandchildren, and great grandchild, Kristina, Stella and Lily.
The oldest of 8 siblings, Phyllis also leaves behind her loving sisters Lilla and Heather, and brother Clifford. She was predeceased by her dear siblings Carl, Brenda, Kevin and Cindy, whom she held close in her heart throughout her life. She will be missed by many nieces and nephews, and close friends.
Phyllis was extremely proud of her roles as wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother. In her earlier years, while living in Montreal, she married and raised her three children. Mid life, she moved to Calgary, and remained there for the rest her life. Phyllis always worked outside of the home. Her work role was that of a receptionist, always proudly presenting herself as the first face seen on behalf of some very prestigious firms over her career. She enjoyed her work, pristinely preparing and dressing to be out and about in the world each day. Amongst other interests, she had a passion for the best culinary experiences, always challenging herself to create and present some of the finest dishes. One of her favourite pass times was to scroll through recipe after recipe, gather her own culinary ideas and then create a food masterpiece of her own. She enjoyed positive reaction to her cooking from guests, and always welcomed the praise. The kitchen is where you would often find her on weekends, with a glass of wine in hand, and creating. Her approach at life was to live it to its fullest, without exception. When she was able, she travelled to many beautiful places with Bruce. They always had a ‘next trip’ on the horizon planned. She was known to be feisty, had a sharp wit, and always had a spirited opinion to offer. You just needed to ask.
Over the last number of years, she slowly battled the difficult disease of dementia and it’s complications. In the end, the disease won, but she fought hard with determination, courage and strength until the very end. Her life’s story will live on through her family and the lives that she touched over her lifetime.
The family wishes to thank the medical team at Monterey Seniors Village for their efforts and care they provided to Phyllis these last years, and also the kindness and support they gave to family members near and far.
In keeping with Phyllis’ wishes, there will be no funeral or celebratory services. Cremation will take place at a later date. The family invites friends and family to leave fond memories of Phyllis in the memories section on this page.
For those wishing to make a memorial donation in honour of Phyllis, the family would like you to consider the Alzheimer’s Association of Calgary or the Alzheimer’s Association of Canada.
