Richard John Bruce Cross passed away peacefully in Calgary, Alberta on July 27, at the age of 82 years. Richard is lovingly remembered and missed by his wife; Louise, his son; Clarke (Valerie Prefontaine), and his grandson Gabriel.
He was predeceased by his parents; Ella and Dick Cross.
He was born on July 4, 1944 in Fort William, Ontario, and raised in Montreal, Quebec.
Richard spent the early years of his career in Hamilton and Mississauga, Ontario, but he was very much an Albertan at heart. He found great joy in the outdoors, whether running or walking through Fish Creek Park or hiking among the majestic peaks of the Rocky Mountains.
Richard spent his career with Shell Canada, where he played a key role in many of the company's major projects. Respected by colleagues for his professionalism, integrity, and quiet leadership. Richard was also extraordinarily generous and humble, embodying the very definition of a gentleman.
Family was the centre of Richard's life. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who cherished nothing more than spending time with those he loved. His family and friends will forever remember his signature laugh, whose warmth and infectious spirit could brighten any room. It is a sound that will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Richard will also be remembered as a fighter. When he was diagnosed with cancer in 2010, he was given only a few years to live. Through his remarkable determination, courage, and resilience, combined with the exceptional care provided by the doctors, nurses, and staff at the Calgary Cancer Centre, Richard was granted many more precious years. Those years brought countless cherished memories, adventures, and trips with his family, including the joy of watching his grandson grow up.
Richard's legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the love he shared, and the example he set. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A Celebration of Richard's Life will be held at South Calgary Funeral Centre (12700 Macleod Trail South Calgary, AB) Thursday, September 3 at 2:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Canadian Cancer Society in Richard’s memory.
