Dick was pre-deceased by his first wife, Eileen (nee Battrum) and one daughter, Elizabeth Severson. Dick was born in England and lived most of his childhood years in Stalbridge, Dorset. His first years were made busy and happy with family, school, church and part time work. His true calling was with policing and he became the youngest member of the police service in Halifax, England. When World War II broke out Dick signed up with the RAF and was assigned to serve in the Military Police. That led to his posting to Calgary, a place he knew about from a book once given to him by a favourite teacher. Dick married and started his family here, but was called back to England where he served until the war ended. He returned to Canada, joined the Calgary Police Service in 1947 and served for 30 years, retiring as Sergeant of Detectives. Dick was a long time member of the Masonic Lodge and the Calgary Stampede Board. He was active with various square dancing clubs over many years and called his last square dance just this past July at the 100th Calgary Stampede. Dick's family enjoyed his long years of support and encouragement. His presence at family gatherings always made them more special events and many card and board games were made livelier by his taking part. The last decade of Dick’s life was spent happily married to Fran. Dick and Fran always enjoyed their neighbours, friends and family as well as travelling and gardening together. A celebration of Dick's life will be held at Foster's Garden Chapel, 3220 - 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen's Park Cemetery) on Monday, September 10, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made directly to the Rosedale Hospice, 920 7A Street NW, Calgary, AB T2M 3J3.
