September 11, 1925 – August 22, 2012
After a long and contented life, Robert Charles (Bob) Guise, cherished husband and best friend to Leona, proud father and doting grandpa passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on Wednesday, August 22, 2012. Dad was born on September 11, 1925 in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. He came to Calgary at the age of two years and lived here until his passing. Dad is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Leona Belle (Whitworth); children David (Mary), Donald (Virginia), Barbara Johns (Dale), Douglas (Roslyn) and Kenneth; and grandchildren Neil, Dylan and Alison. He was predeceased by his parents, and three older brothers, Allan, Geoffrey and Kenneth. Dad attended Western Canada High School, graduating in 1943. After graduation he joined the RCAF, where he qualified as an Air Bomber in November 1945. He was in the Air Force for two years, stationed in Cold Lake, Alberta and Claresholm, Alberta as well as Malton, Ontario. The war ended before dad was called overseas. After the war, Dad was enrolled at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology where he completed a program in Construction Technology. A 40 year career in the construction community in Calgary then followed. His early career as a lather, plasterer and carpenter evolved into positions as foreman, then to sales and management positions with companies such as Larwell Construction, Moray Lathing, the Pedlar People and Alberta Drywall Supply. He was well known and respected throughout the Calgary construction industry. He finished his career by starting his own small company, RG Construction Services, where he enjoyed the independence of being his own boss. It was a successful and rewarding end to his career. On a blind date in July 1949, dad met the love of his life - our mom. They married a year later on June 30, 1950. Together they built our family home on 6 Avenue in Parkdale and there raised five children in a happy household. As their children grew and left home, dad and mom enjoyed many trips, travelling to England, Fiji, Asia, Australia and New Zealand visiting children and grandchildren. They also enjoyed trips closer to home, travelling to the Maritimes, Vermont, San Francisco, New Orleans, Montreal and Toronto. In addition to travelling with mom, Dad loved mince tarts with a dollop of whipped cream, apple pie, raisin pie, black licorice, turtles, filberts and maple walnut ice cream. He also loved planes, trains, going for long walks and dressing up in a good suit. He loved his kids, his grandchildren and his dogs but most of all he loved our mom. And she loved him. Theirs was a true love story. Their marriage was based on mutual love, respect, kindness and affection. They were always each other‘s best friend and soul mate. We are grateful for the wonderful example they have given us. Dad was kind, thoughtful and humble and always optimistic. He was a good man. He leaves behind a great legacy of love and many, many wonderful memories. We will miss him forever. A Memorial Service will be held at Parkdale United Church, 2919 – 8 Avenue NW on Tuesday, August 28, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkdale United Church, 2919 – 8 Avenue NW, Calgary, Alberta T2N 1C8.
