Russ Brown passed away peacefully at AgeCare McKenzie Towne in Calgary, Alberta on Sunday, June 29, 2025, at the age of 95 years. He was born to Will and Gladys Brown in Castor in 1930 and raised on the family farm in the company of his 8 siblings and many cousins. In those early years, he gained his lifelong love of music and reading. He met his wife, Trudy Falkenberg, in high school and they married in 1957 spending 63 happy years together tending their home and beautiful yard and garden in Calgary until she predeceased him in 2020.
He is fondly remembered by his daughter Dawn Hansen (Peter); sons Warren Brown (Joanne) and Doug Brown; as well as grandchildren Ruth (Mac), Krista (Simon), Sean (Maleeha) and Katelyn. He is survived by his sister, Ruth Towns (Ed), sister-in-law Edna Schultz and numerous nephews and nieces.
His first occupation was continuing to live and work on the mixed family farm. When his parents retired to Calgary in 1957, he followed them and began work with the City of Calgary during which time he completed his Registered Industrial Accountant designation. He joined the City’s curling league and recalled being the skip.
He and Trudy were one of the unofficial founding members of the community of Highwood. Active members of Highwood Lutheran Church, they became part of another little family there. He also volunteered as a Cub Scout leader at the Highwood Community Hall. After an early retirement from the City of Calgary in 1988, he dedicated his accounting skills to the Calgary Schizophrenia Society as volunteer treasurer.
Dad was family-focussed and all who met him described him as an easy-going and pleasant man who enjoyed seeing the humorous side of life. We wish to express our thanks to the caregivers from All About Seniors, Bethany Airdrie, and AgeCare McKenzie Towne and all medical staff we encountered.
A Service of Remembrance will be held at Foster’s Garden Chapel on Monday, July 14, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made directly to the charity of your choice.
