Born on January 23, 1943, in Canton, China, Sai Kam grew up with a vibrant spirit and a love for her family, activities and sports. During her school years, she especially enjoyed basketball, where she formed many friendships that lasted throughout her life. She grew up in a large family as the fourth child, with three older siblings and two younger ones. In 1972, she married and immigrated with her husband to Calgary, Alberta, where they started their family and began a new chapter filled with hard work, community, and opportunity. Over time, many of her friends, including one of her sisters also came to Calgary, creating a close knit circle that remained a source of joy and support for decades.
Sai Kam was a devoted mother who expressed her love in countless ways. Facing the challenges of being in a new country and environment, she worked tirelessly throughout her life, taking on long hours and demanding jobs so her family could build a better future in their new home. Even after a long day’s work, she returned with quiet strength and unwavering commitment, ensuring her household was cared for. She tended to every detail of family life, creating a home filled with stability, comfort, and warmth. She supported her sons through school, celebrated their achievements, and guided them with gentle discipline and steady encouragement. Her care was constant, practical, and deeply felt.
In her later years, she embraced daily exercise and long walks, finding peace, routine, and independence in movement. One of her greatest joys, however, was becoming a grandmother. She treasured every moment spent with her grandchildren—playing with them, feeding them, watching over them—and took immense pride in seeing them grow. She created a special bond with them and celebrated each milestone with heartfelt delight and enthusiasm.
Sai Kam is lovingly remembered by her husband of 53 years, Frank Dew; her sons Johnson (Claire) and James (Jasmine); and her treasured grandchildren Lucas Jonah and Zachary Jacob.
She is also survived by her four siblings: sisters Choi Kam and Mun Kam, and brothers Kwan Hung and Kwan Keung.
She is predeceased by one sister, Hing Kam.
Her life was devoted to the people she loved, and her presence will remain deeply cherished in the hearts of her family and all who knew her. Sai Kam’s family and friends will forever remember her warmth, her strength, her quiet determination, and the steady love she gave so generously.
