It is with great sadness to announce the passing of Shek Foo Leung (“Frank”). Frank passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at the Southwood Hospice in Calgary, AB on Saturday, March 12, 2016 at the age of 74 years.
Frank was born in Toi Shan, China, in 1941 but spent his early adult years in Hong Kong. He was a husband, father and grandfather. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of forty nine years, Elsie; his children, Franco (Nancy), Amery (Kenneth), and Preeminence (Kelly); grandchildren, Thomas, Julianna, Kennedy and Joshua; as well as his sisters, nieces, nephews and friends. He is also survived by his two older sisters, Fuk Kam Lee and Lanny Dong.
Frank knew at a young age that he wanted to obtain an education in order to have a better life and completed both a Bachelor of Commerce and Masters of Economics degrees. After completing university, Frank worked at a bank in the import/export department. He met his wife Elsie through a co-worker and married in January 1967 and welcomed their first son, Franco, later that year.
A dream of a better life led Frank to Canada by himself in 1968 where he found work at a steakhouse in British Columbia. A year later, Elsie and Franco joined him and they moved to Drumheller to operate a café. In 1970, Frank moved to Calgary where he purchased a grocery store. Frank and Elsie had a daughter, Amery, and another son, Preeminence. At various times over a span of 20 years, Elsie looked after the grocery store, while Frank briefly operated several fast food restaurants in downtown Calgary, a second grocery store in Bridgeland and dabbled in real estate. After 20 years of running businesses, Frank sold the original grocery store in the early 1990’s and attempted retirement. Boredom eventually led him back into work where he co-owned and/or operated multiple Esso gas stations in the span of more than 15 years and finally retired in 2009.
Frank very much had an entrepreneurial spirit and worked long hours to ensure the best education for his children and never complained of the hardship and ensured that the important lessons and values he had experienced throughout his life were passed on to future generations.
Frank enjoyed traveling during his retirement. He visited several U.S. states, toured Europe, Asia and sailed on many cruises. However, his favorite destination was China where he frequently vacationed.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Sandra Anderson with the Hepatology Clinic at the Foothills Medical Centre and the staff at Southwood Hospice for their care of their (grand) father.
Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at a Visitation held at FOSTER'S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 - 4 Street N.W., Calgary on Friday, March 18, 2016 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held at FOSTER'S GARDEN CHAPEL on Saturday, March 19, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. with interment to follow at Queen's Park Cemetery.
