After the war and his years at university, he began a long career as a research electronics engineer at the National Research Council in Ottawa. Initially his work assignments were related to projects for the Canadian military. Subsequently his assignments took him all over North America. For example he was part of the team firing rockets in the high- out- there to learn more about its characteristics. He was also part of the team engaged in the development of the radio telescope erected in Olgonquin Park, Ontario. He played a role in developing the program for funding the creation of computer centres in Canadian universities. He also served on committees working to move the results of engineering research into the hands of companies looking to expand the sophistication of their products and services.
Stanley supported a number of charities. He has also endowed a graduate scholarship in Engineering at the University of Alberta. His family has lost a generous, gentle giant who had a warm heart.
