Born on August 18, 1943, in Hope River, Prince Edward Island, Thelma lived a life filled with love, music, family, and faith.
She was predeceased by her beloved son, Glenn Joseph McDonald; her first husband and father of her children, Wendell McDonald; the love of her life and husband, Jack Gordon Hancock; her parents, Leo and Mary Gallant; her son-in-law, Jeff Smith; and her siblings Helena Deveau, Alfred Gallant, Reg Gallant, Ray Gallant, Paul Gallant, Doris Reid, Anita Doiron, and Fran McDonald.
Thelma will be deeply missed by her children, Paul McDonald and Lisa Smith; her cherished grandchildren, Nick (Beth) Smith and Christopher Smith; and her precious great-granddaughter, Sloan, who was a joyful gift from Nick and Beth.
One of nine children, Thelma deeply loved her brothers and sisters and delighted in the closeness and joy of a large family. She was a gifted singer and musician whose infectious smile and warm spirit lit up every room. Many memorable kitchen parties were filled with her laughter and song. Her best friend and “partner in adventure,” Bev, was the light of her days. Together they shared countless shopping trips, lunches, and lifelong memories. Bev’s faithful presence by her side until the very end was a blessing beyond measure.
Thelma’s journey took her from Prince Edward Island to Boston, where she raised her three children, and later to Calgary, where she met her soulmate, Jack. She enjoyed a fulfilling career, retiring from Nortel Networks, and remained an active and devoted member of her church choir.
Above all, Thelma will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She touched the lives of many and leaves behind cherished memories that will be treasured forever.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, August 29, 2025, at St. Mark’s Church, 5552 Madigan Drive NE, Calgary, AB T2A 4P2.
There will be a time for Visitation prior to mass and a reception at St. Mark's to follow.
