Bill was born on August 28, 1937, in Xiangjiao Village, Zhongshan, China to Mew Cheun and Sue Ming Yuen. In 1952, at the age of 15, he immigrated to Canada with his family. Bill attended Langevin School in Bridgeland, completing Grade 9.
In 1960, Bill married Jean Cheuk Kwan Lau, and together they had 3 sons: Manley, Gordon, and Peter. Bill was a loving husband and father and through the years, he also became a supportive father-in-law, a doting grandfather and a joyful great-grandfather.
Bill co-owned and ran the family coffee shop in NW Calgary (Thorncliffe) in the 1960s.
Following this, Bill worked as a newspaper bindery worker at the Calgary Albertan from 1968 to 1985. Later in 1985, Bill became a shop worker and custodian at the CPR Ogden rail yard, where he worked until his retirement in 2002.
In 2012, Bill was one of the original tenants to reside at Oi Kwan Place (presently known as Clover Living) in Calgary’s Chinatown. Bill came and went as he pleased and became very adept at using the bus system. He lived there until 2020, when his health declined and he required long term care – first at George Boyack and finally at Wing Kei Greenview. The Yuen family would like to take this opportunity to express our thanks to all the staff for their excellent care and love for Bill in his final years.
Bill enjoyed reading his Bible, praying, listening to Christian worship music or recorded sermons. He was a faithful and devout Christian man who loved his Lord Jesus and was a great role model for his family.
Bill is lovingly remembered by his children: Manley and Nancy Yuen, Gordon and Karen Roxann Yuen; his grandchildren: Elizabeth and Christopher Liu, Madelaine, Rebecca and Rachel Yuen, and Uriel Jens; and his great-granddaughter, Isabelle Liu.
Bill was predeceased by his wife, Jean Yuen (1992); son, Peter Yuen (1980); father, Mew Cheun Yuen (1975); mother, Sue Ming Yuen (1995); sister, Helen Louie (1999); brother-in-law Stanley Louie (1997), and brother Wilson Chong Wing Yuen (1967).
A Funeral Service will be held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL on Saturday, November 7, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery.
