1928 – 2019
Yvonne passed away peacefully in Calgary, Alberta on Friday, May 31, 2019 at the age of 91 years. She was born in Taisan Dick Hoy Village, China in 1928. She was the only daughter of eight children.
She loved family, reading and education. Her beloved father passed away when she was seventeen. As was the custom in those days, at 19, she met and married Frank Doi Hey Wong who was from a good family from the neighbouring town. Both loved education and sports. Yvonne attended a highly regarded English Catholic School, Sacred Heart, and Frank was a graduate of The University of Guangzhou. Their first child was a daughter Louise, later came Gordon, Marjorie, Dorothy, Albert, Mary and Allen.
After surviving the Japanese occupation of China and Communist China, Yvonne, Frank and family immigrated to Canada in 1964 to settle in Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan. Frank’s father had a restaurant and various businesses in the town with a population 1200. They came from Hong Kong to Canada with very little other than clothes. Both she and Frank worked hard and eventually saved enough to purchase their own restaurant in Cabri and then another in Gravelbourg. In 1974 she and Frank decided to move to Calgary so that their children could attend post-secondary school there. Yvonne, herself, was a lifelong learner and read many books, fiction and non-fiction. She had excellent penmanship and her English was superior to most. She loved homemade Chinese cuisine and watched many a food-video on the preparation of it. She wanted her children to exceed and better themselves and always encouraged her children to do well in school. Her children fulfilled her wishes as they completed their degrees and are now professionals in medicine, pharmacy, law, education and banking. Louise, the eldest, is a “Red Seal Chef”.
Yvonne loved her family and extended family. She was rich in kindness to others and affected everyone she met. Her emphasis on helping others often came at a sacrifice of her owns needs. A truly classy, resourceful, generous soul. She was tireless in her effort to bring her brothers’ families to Canada and now many have a new and bright future because of her relentless works. She was always encouraging and optimistic. Everyone who came in contact with her was important and welcomed. Little children to seniors older than herself, she made them feel important. A true kind soul. We will always miss Yvonne as she rejoins Frank in heaven but she will live forever in our hearts and minds because of all the kindness and consideration she has passed on to us. Rest in peace Yvonne, we will unite and meet again someday.
We miss you Mom…..
The family wish to thank all the staff at Wing Kei Nursing Home and the medical assistance she received during her stay there.
