Died peacefully on June 27, 2012, after an extended illness. George will be missed both by the friends who knew him well and by the many people he charmed in the run of a day. Left to mourn are his beloved wife of nearly fifty years, Beverly, his cherished daughter Tryna (Andrea) of Halifax, and brothers Robert (Rachel) of Hull and Gerald (Kim) of Toronto.
George’s love for people, food, and music was cultivated in Montreal, where he spent his first four decades. The family moved to Cambridge to pursue career opportunities and to oppose the Quebec language laws enacted in 1976. After being employed as a professional for more than thirty years, when George was downsized in 1989 he began work as a handyman, an occupation to which he was ideally suited, given his geniality, his Scottish work ethic, and his comprehensive knowledge of everything from plumbing to politics. As his illness progressed, George gave up many of the activities he loved, but he never lost his dignity, his patience, or his appreciation for life’s everyday pleasures.
Although cremation has taken place, there will be a visitation with family and friends at 1pm Saturday, June 30, at the Barthel Funeral Home, 566 Queenston Road, Cambridge (519-653-3251) ,followed by a memorial service at 2pm. You are also invited to a reception afterward, location to be announced. As expressions of sympathy, please donate to the Medical Daycare program at the Cambridge Memorial Hospital or to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada. The family thanks the many medical professionals and supportive friends who helped George along on this journey; their kindnesses are too many to be named or repaid.
