It is with deep love and sorrow that the family of Glen David McCartney announces his sudden passing on October 22, 2025, at the age of 76. Born in Owen Sound, Ontario, on November 15, 1948, the youngest child of Archibald and Irene McCartney (née Spencer), Glen lived a life marked by kindness, humour, and unwavering devotion to his family.
Glen began his working life in Tobermory aboard the MS Normac, sailing the waters between the Bruce Peninsula and Manitoulin Island. He later worked as a truck driver for Ariscraft, Transfreight and Penske, where his reliability, strong work ethic, and easygoing nature earned him the respect and friendship of many.
Glen’s life was defined not only by what he did, but by how he gave. He loved his family deeply and would do absolutely anything for anyone. He was the kind of man who showed up — often with Tim Hortons coffees, muffins, or scratch tickets — and always with a smile. His generosity was instinctive, not performative. Every Christmas, he ensured that no one was forgotten, creating the much-loved “Uncle Glen packages” of chocolates and gift cards that became a cherished family tradition.
He had a lifelong passion for old collector cars, loved solving puzzles, and could often be found “tinkering” in the garage, fixing or improving something just for the joy of it. Glen also loved to share stories — there was always a memory, a laugh, or a piece of wisdom ready at any moment.
Though technically an uncle and great-uncle to many, titles never fully captured what Glen meant to those who loved him. He was a steady presence, a mentor, a partner in mischief, a father figure, a reliable neighbour, and a best friend. His laughter came easily, his advice quietly, and his help without hesitation.
Glen was predeceased by his parents, Irene (née Spencer) and Archibald McCartney, and by his brother Ernie McCartney. He is lovingly remembered by his brothers Ken McCartney (Ruth) and George McCartney (Ruby, deceased).
He will be dearly missed by his nephews Marty McCartney (Barb McCartney), Rick McCartney (Pam McCartney), Wally McCartney, Bob Connor, and Jim Connor (deceased), as well as nieces Anna McCartney and Tanya McCartney.
Glen’s pride and affection extended to his great-nieces and great-nephews: Kate McCartney, Amber McCartney-Manning (Ashlee), Brooke McCartney-Langon (Adrian), Kristi Laffin-McCartney (Norm), Nicole Hollingworth (Bruce), Jesse McCartney (Teigan), Joel Beke (Stef), and Janis Trayes (Steve).
He was also a beloved great-great-uncle to Tristan, Cassidy, Elam, Autumn, Garret, Mitchell, Jaxson, Kaija, Chloe, Jaxon, Jayden, Tenley, and Brock, each of whom brought him immense joy and pride.
Glen’s absence leaves a void that cannot be filled, but his spirit will live on in the countless ways he touched our lives — through his kindness, humour, generosity, and the love he gave so freely.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Glen’s honour at Barthel Funeral Home, 566 Queenston Rd., Cambridge, ON, on Thursday, October 30, 2025, from 4:00–8:00 p.m.
Those wishing to honour Glen’s memory are encouraged to perform a simple act of kindness — buy someone a coffee, help a neighbour, or share a laugh — just as he so often did.
