OWENS; Hazel It is with full and peaceful hearts that the family of Hazel Owens announces her passing on April 7, 2011 at Cambridge Memorial Hospital in her 88th year. Hazel was predeceased by her husband and soul mate, Jack Douglas Owens (July 1, 2004) to whom she was married for 60 years, brother Don Stuart, sister-in-law Clara Stuart and parents Earl and Mabel Stuart (Kimpel). She is survived by the joys of her life, her children, Melodie Roth (Michael), Craig Owens (Joanne), and Garth Owens (Barbara). Hazel will be remembered with love and great affection by her grandchildren Julianne Roth-Hergott (Brent Hergott), Michael Roth (Fiona), Trisha Owens (Matt) Trevor Owens (Andrea), Jesse Owens (Laura) and Jaime Owens (Nick) and her great-grandchildren, Jack and Matthew Hergott, Kaitlyn, Molly, and Mikey Roth, Tristan Owens and Jaxon Owens whom she loved greatly and was greatly loved in return. Mom’s brother Doug Stuart and family, sister Joyce Spencer (Vern) and family, and sister-in-law Lorna Stuart and family will fondly remember with gratitude her wise counsel, her laughter, and her joy in all of their accomplishments. Mom left us a great legacy when she wrote “Hands of Time” and “Attic Treasures”, memoirs of her youth and life in her beloved Preston, sharing her observations and anecdotes of her family and life events as she saw them. Mom worked hard her entire life, putting others before herself in every endeavor. She was multi-talented, working as a butcher, secretary, clerk, and finally as a society reporter for the Cambridge Reporter. An involved and valued member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, she belonged to the choir for 60 years, and was a 45 year member of the K-W Sweet Adelines, an organization that gave to her such happiness and self-fulfillment. Mom was voted ‘Sweet Adeline of the year” and sang lead in the popular quartet “The Dial Tones”, singing wherever and whenever asked, be it on T.V., for corporate functions, or for local retirement homes and hospitals. Whether in the capacity of friend, colleague, neighbour, sister, aunt, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother or simply the person one passed on the street, Mom always offered a smile, her service and her compassion; and no matter what the circumstances, Mom always believed her life was blessed--and we have been so blessed to be a part of her life. The family would like to thank all those special people who gave of their time to visit, especially Mom’s dear friend and neighbour, Ella, whom she regarded as a sister and co-hort in crime. Ellie’s loving care and watch over Mom has been so greatly appreciated. The family wishes to express a special thanks to the nurses and staff of Cambridge Memorial Hospital of their compassionate care of Mom, with a special thank you to Leanne. Thank you also to CCAC & Red Cross and a huge thank you and hug to Jaime for her unwavering care of her Grandma in her final days. We love you! A Funeral Service was held from St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Cambridge on Monday April 11, 2011.
